Hi to all. I was able to purchase 5 of Tom Clancy's books at a sale. These are in beautiful condition, as though never read. How do I tell if they are 1st edition or not? It does not say 2nd printing or give 2nd date in them anywhere. What exactly should I look for?

Does it have a number line? 10 9 8 7 6 5 4 3 2 1 would indicate a First Edition in some cases. Publishers do not all indicate First Editions in the same way. I would need to have more information to give you an exact answer. Knowing the publisher would also help.

You might see if there is a single digit number down at the bottom of the page. It might be 2,3,4 etc. This usually indicates the run of the first edition. I'm not real up on this sort of thing, but a smaller number or no number is indicative of the more valuable book.

Ok, more info. 2 of them have the numbers 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8 9 10. 1 of them have the numbers ranging 20-11. 4 of them are published by Putnam, one of them by Berkley. Anything else to look for?

rarriffle ~ Your information is a little confusing. You have 5 books but you only give me information for 3.

The two that have the 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8 9 10 number lines are First Editions and I presume published by Putnam. My book does not list a publisher named Berkley. That could be a Book Club Edition but I'm not sure.

If the other two are published by Putnam and do not have the numbers I listed above they are not First Editions.

Tom Clancy might be a hack, but I'd prefer his hack to a lot of the dreck out there.

Tom Clancy's Hunt For Red October was first published by The Naval Institute Press.

rarriffle- There are different ways that publishers list their first editions. If you go to Barnes and Noble or ABE there is a section on First editions. ABE is http://www.abebooks.com Here is a paragraph from national book collectors association-Many modern publishers use a number or letter system to designate first editions. 1234567890 or ABCDE where the 1 and the A indicates a first edition if the 1 or A is missing then that book is probably a second printing as designated by the remaining 2. Sometimes numbers are in reverse. Random house uses First Edition in place of the 1. Thus a Random House book stating First Edition starting at the number 2 is first edition, first state book. I hope this helps.

Berkley and Putnam are the same publisher now. Also seen as Berkley/Putnam.

nowhat- The reason I only listed data on 3 of the books is because I see nothing on the other 2 that identifys what printing it could be.
