I've seen it mentioned here numerous times that it could be risky to do off-eBay transactions, so I thought I'd post my off-eBay experience today.
I was looking for Olympic pins. Although I didn't find what I was looking for listed on eBay, I found my way to a website with a number of pins listed for trade. There were a couple I was interested in, so I emailed asking if they were also for sale. I received a reply within an hour, letting me know that I could purchase them if I liked. I was given a price and the option to pay through PayPal, which is what I did.
Ten minutes ago, I checked my email, and was surprised to see a PayPal "You've got cash!" email. It was from the seller of the pins, along with another email explaining that the money was a refund. She told me that she had made a mistake- that I was given the wrong total due and had been charged too much for the pins. Had I not received that email, I would have never known that I had overpaid.
I know if you read this board much, it can be disappointing at times with all the talk of problem transactions, but there are good people out there, after all.

I agree. Good to see some of the good stuff that goes on too.
I think this stuff goes on more often than we realize. It's the bad stuff that we all go ballistic over that sticks out though. As a result the bad stuff is what is remembered.
I try really hard to see and be thankful for all of the good things that go on, but know I take way too much for granted too.

Another thing that happens with PayPal is if the buyer clicks the "Send cash" button more than once, the payment gets sent more than once, too (funny how that works). I had a buyer pay three times for the same item. I re-beamed him the extra money, and when I sent my "Payment received" email to him, I told him I had also refunded his overpayment through PayPal.
He thanked me, and said that he thought he might have paid more than once, but wasn't sure how to check to find out. To this day, I don't see how that would be a difficult thing to look up, but I guess you never know.

I'm sorry to jump in on your thread, but this is a good place to post this.
There was a very old genuine IBM keyboard up for auction (Model F). I missed the end of auction and it sold for a buck. I wrote to the buyer and said if he found the keyboard did not fit his computer and he wanted to sell it, to let me know.
Two weeks later, he offered me the keyboard for $15. total. The shipping alone would have been about $9 since it was heavy. I was thrilled and mailed him a check for $15.
The check has yet to show up. I inquired and the seller said: Don't worry about it. I'll send you the keyboard, if the check shows up, fine, if not, that's fine too. I offered to send another check but he said, No, don't worry about it.
The keyboard arrived a few days ago. I hope this guy has great luck in his auctions.

I like reading things like this... very nice indeed.
Glad it is working out for everyone...never had a problem myself either.

Bottomfeeding?
There were two scenarios here: One was a person who went to an eBay sellers' web site and purchased items, another was asking a person if the nearly impossible to find item they bought was unusable to them, I'd purchase it.
I think bottomfeeders are scum but don't see where that term applies in this thread.

I have gotten lots of "orders" from people who have missed my dutch auctions ... also people who see my auctions and are directed to my home page and order stuff from there. Very nice additional sales.
BTW krs... I was scrolling down reading the serious posts when I got to yours... LOL ROFLMAO. Great post thanks!

I'm having a kind of a problem with my first off-eBay deal. Two pieces of fabric ended without bids, and I heard from a woman a few hours later who wanted to buy them for my opening price. I agreed, she paid via PayPal, and I shipped the items. She wrote me on receipt, saying she was very disappointed...that for several reasons they did not seem to be what I had described. She asked me for an explanation (not a refund or a discount), and I wrote and apologized for her disappointment and offered a full refund plus shipping both ways. I also cleared up her questions (several of which were answered in the auction description). That was a week ago, and I've heard nothing since!
If she was that distressed, why not take me up on my refund offer? I've read about folks who do this, fishing for a discount on what they've bought, but if that was the case, why not ask for one? I haven't written back because honestly, I don't know what to do now. I'd like to put an end to this, one way or another. Either we consider the deal done and over with, or she ships the stuff back and I send the refund. Right now, I am in limbo. What would you do?
