I am wondering if anyone has any ideas on what techniques could be employed in order to get sellers of goods (both new and used) to proactively contact you, the eBay seller?
What I mean is before a person puts on a yard sale, or an estate sale, or any other type of used goods sale, is there a way to get these types of people to contact you BEFORE they do it.
In other words, how can you get people to sell their items to you PROACTIVELY?
If anyone can figure this out it would save us all an enormous amount of time going out and sourcing fresh items to sell. I've heard that some people put ads in the paper that say something like "Moving? Don't want to take it with you? Call me and I'll buy it ALL!"
I've also heard about some eBayers setting up alliances with real estate agents, moving companies, the post office and even funeral homes! to get the "inside scoop" on new potential product sources.
Any ideas, thoughts, or brainstorms on this PROACTIVE item sourcing strategy?

Put an ad in your local new papers and weekly and monthly want ad digests under wanted and the items you are looking for and willing to buy for CASH.
also a good place to put your ads supermarket buletin boards ECT. just keep in mind once you do this it will label you as a dealer and when you do show up at garage sales and stuff they will know you prolly wont have no bargining power.

Spend a few years developing relationships with real estate agents, lawyers, banks, people who do cleanouts of estates, other dealers, keep an ad running in your local newspaper every day, and once in a while you will get a call, there is no easy answer to your question, just because you advertise that you buy doesn't mean you will be called there are dozens of others out there who do the same thing, its a tough business and takes a lot of time and money

I don't mind being labelled a "dealer" because I am one! Why? Would people not want to sell to a "dealer"? Isn't the name of the game for them to get rid of stuff...and FAST?!!! They want to clear out things. I want to buy things. I can clear it all out immediately. No more trouble or hassle for them. What do you think?

Many people don't like to sell to dealers. They feel that since the dealer is buying to make a profit, they are getting robbed somehow. I am not kidding.

We tried this a few years back - made a HUGE effort and it was a huge waste of time. Everyone who called wanted book value / top dollar for their widget(s)- they just didn't get it. Either that or they wanted info and did not want to pay for it.

Very interesting replies to my post. I still think that there must be a way to proactively get sellers to approach you wil their used goods. Isn't there any way of having people do this, but without YOU being seen as a dealer? Or, at least, how can you as a dealer be repositioned to be seen as providing a valuable service...namely that you are helping them to dispose of their goods!
Let's wrap our heads around this and figure out a way to STOP running around and sourcing new/old goods to sell. I want sellers beating my door down with thier wares!

Well there might be one way to do this and have it seen as a valuble service to help them clean out and dispose of there goods with out being seen as a dealer.
instead of running an ad to buy Items run it as an Actic Cellar clean out service ad as a person with a big truck who will bring the truck leave it for the weekend for $100 per load they can fill it up with there unwanted actic and Cellar junk.
Spring clean up service what ever
not only will you get there unwanted items but you get paid.

WOW! What a super idea! Thanks! But won't you just get their "junk"? I want the good stuff? How can we get them to sell us the good stuff?

I have never tried buying someone's entire garage sale but I would imagine that in order to establish a good reputation, you would have to be willing to actually buy everything, not just cherry-pick the good stuff. Then you would have to somehow dispose of the junk.

jules...it's a sad story.
Seriously. Be careful about advertising you carry cash. Dealers in our area have been robbed...

If you are in the right location, offer to let others use your yard for their garrage sale. That way you see the stuff as it is coming in and get first crack at it. i ahve been thinking of that. Where I live, I have a large side yard fully in view of the road with plenty of parking area.

rvlawrence, sure you can get them to sell you the good stuff but be prepared to pay for it, I think you want an instant fix, wish I had one, spend several years building a reputation that you are honest and willing to pay a fair price, that way they call you before anyone else and even recommend you to their friends who will do the same, unfortunately all this takes a lot of time and patience and money, it doesn't happen overnight

I'll sell you my stuff!
But you can't have the lamps in the attic. I'm waiting for the "Antiques Roadshow" to come to town.
And those beat up chairs over there? I'm taking those to "Appraise It!"
I'm also keeping those glasses in big box. I'm sure they'll turn out to be a treasure at the "Appraisal Fair."
Those old kids toys and the Barbies with the missing hair? I'm selling those on eBay! They're worth a lot, I know!
And I want $1,500 for the rest of my junk. (I know I'll only get $400 for it at my next yard sale.)
Raglady1 is right. Take time to build a reputation and don't look for fast bucks to come to you. You'll have to work hard, be fast and be fair. There are a LOT of people doing what you're trying to do.
edited because I finally had time to catch the typo.

Aren't you the person who post to this board so that you can gather information on "How to sell on ebay". Another poster to this board looked up your ebay auctions and you sell CDs that purport to tell people where to get items, ect. So all those people posting answers to this thread are really helping you write a new CD for you to sell on ebay? Do the people kind enough to answer your post know that??
