I just got this from Stamps.com:

Changing Postal Rates
In January 2001 the USPS postal rates will increase. At this time the new rates for each Mail Class have not been disclosed. Keep looking for future issues of the Stay Posted Newsletter and e-mails from Stamps.com for information on the new rates, and how to easily update your Stamps.com software. Once the update is ready you will be reminded to upgrade your software when you login to your Stamps.com account. We'll keep you posted!

It looks like a postage stamp will be .34 and Priority will be $3.45 up to 1# and $3.85 for the 2# flat rate.

Here is the USPS Proposed rates

Technically that's true; they're called "proposed" but the increases are as good as done.

And the insurance is going up from .85 to 1.35 for the first $50.00 insured.

Well, at least my shipping charge will stay intact (it is 4 dollars even).

Now my only problem would be... what do I do with 3.20 Priority stamps when they make the switch?

I am sure we'll see more bellyachers about being "gouged" for shipping.

It looks like the typical cost of shipping a book will be up about $.10-.15. This is hardly a big deal...but I expect to see some people get even more nitpicky about shipping costs.

I may be the only person to want higher rates, but I want the First Class stamp to be raised to $0.35.

That way, I can place a Priority Stamp &
First Class stamp to pay for delivery confirmation. =)

Sorry sun818, the proposal calls for delivery confirmation to go up to $0.40.

Hmm, I wonder if the people who make my postal scale will offer an updated chart to stick on there?

Yes, sometime after the rate change is effective, large stationary stores (not necessarily the chain/warehouse types) will have what is called a postal scale faceplate.

What you will need to know for ordering or buying is the number of the existing faceplate. This is usually on the faceplace itself, or on the scale. The number looks like YKK, Y2K, or Y5 or something close, depending upon manufacturer and model number.

The availability of them always seems to lag the need by some period of time, though by using the usps charts of weight/class/cost and the scale we'll survive.

OUCH. that new priority rate is really gonna hurt.

Sell all your extra &/or borderline junk NOW. Don't keep it till after the holidays cuz then you'll NEVER get rid of it.

Pantheus - thank you! I'm glad I won't have to buy a whole 'nother scale... though I could use a bigger one.

Personally, the increase in insurance from .85 to $1.35 is going to hurt me more than the postage increase since everything I ship is insured. I really think that's quite a substantial increase and I may have to start looking around for an alternative insurance method.

Good evening everyone,
The arguments for and against the PO increase were due in by October 2. We have not heard the final increase as of yet but generally they get pretty close to what they are asking for.

All rate increases are effective January 01.

The insurance increase that was requested is $1.35 at $50 and $2.10 at $100.

Have a good week!

This may be a bit off the beaten path, but WHY does the USPS think they should raise the rates? For great delivery?

1/4 of my mail never reaches me. Of the 3/4 that does 1/4 of it takes weeks or more to get here, 1/4 gets delivered to my neighbor and the rest they manage to get right.

It once took two months for a phone bill to reach me. I had a buyer who sent TWO checks to me because the first one never showed up. It took 3 weeks for the second one to get here from California. We should have just met each other half way. Needless to say, I stress to my buyers that sometimes my mail goes astray and sometimes I drive to the next city where the services are better, and that they should PLEASE let me know when they receive their item so I can get off the pins and needles.

An item I purchased never reached me because the mail truck was broken into (so the USPS says) and it was stolen. How they knew that my specific item was stolen is beyond me.

So, raise the rates??? Give me a real good reason. At least in Cleveland, Ohio they should remain the same.
