I got another puzzle.
I have a book "Hemp! for Textile Artists" by Cheryl Kolander. I see a book by same gal on offer on Addall $75-125 range, "A Silkworkers Notebook". This is all I can find (excepting another on Amazon that is not fabric related).

The book is spiral bound paper, 98 pages with lengths of hemp yarn, and hemp fabric samples taped in the book. There are perhaps 15-20 of these swatches.

The book stated "second printing review Edition" and is signed. ISBN says "Pending". c. is 1995 and price on book is $40. The book is real earthy / hippie nothing slick or glossy. OTOH the author / artist is quite obviously a master.

How best to sell this and how to value?
Thanks.

VM, I tell you who would probably know is the people at Dharma Trading in San Rafael, CA. They sell fabrics (hemp fabrics too), dyes, and dyeing supplies, including books, and they are leftover hippies themselves.

http://www.dharmatrading.com for the phone number and contact info.

Thanks SilkMoth, I just posted them. Love the website. "No problem!" Just what you want to hear.

What silkmoth said, although as far as pricing, I'd just start it low, put it in Textiles rather than Books, and see how it flies. As I recall you're doing embarrassingly well with your textile book cache

Dharma is the best. They're real professionals in the truest sense of the word. AND they're usually the cheapest source for what they sell. Go figure.

Thanks HCQ - this book I am going to have to list on ebay because I don't have a choice without an ISBN (yet) but actually the bids have been mediocre on the books. I was really giving them away, and started to get a little snippy about it so I decided to list at half or Amazon depending on the price (high end to Amazon). I have nearly got them all listed now and they are flying off the rack, 2 or 4 a day.

Sales may have been affected by site downtime since that was the time frame I had most of them listed, but just the same - the fixed site selling is bringing me a better return. In almost every case, I have the only copy available and so I price it cheaper than anyone else on the web and it doesn't take long to sell. I did not even get 1/2 of cover for any book on ebay, and all that picture taking and copy writing...

If I learn anything from Dharma, I'll post it here.

No help from Dharma.

I wrote to enquire, said I heard they were the people to ask.

They answered "you have the wrong people."

Oh well.
Thanks for the lead.

Well, poop. How disappointing! Especially since I've always had such good luck with Dharma.

How about Bette Feinstein at Hard to Find Needlework Books? www.needleworkbooks.com

or possibly Kathe Kliot at Lacis... www.lacis.com

Both of these companies deal in uncommon textile books and might be able to help.

Sounds like a neat book. If I were you, I'd be sure to mention hemp in the title of your auction, prominently.

Sorry about the no-help reply from Dharma....they really ARE the best dyeing/silk supply people out there, and usually incredibly nice and helpful. Maybe they were having a bad day.

Someone will want this book....you just have to find the right person. We need a textile auction site......you know how textilejunkies are......their house could be burning down and they keep buying! ('gotta replace the stash'

well h/she wrote me back to say that they would have no idea the value of a book. I answered that I had asked because they have such a reputation for being good at what they do..

..so it was a good exchange in the end.

I do see that there were only 500 copies of the other book by this gal, so that explains the high price. Hopefully someone will come along and tell me if this one ever got published for *real*.

Cheryl Kolander is a texile artist who had a shop in Portland Oregon in the 1980's called Aurora Silk. She sold hand dyed silk yarns for weaving among other things. I bought a copy of her book, A Silkworkers Notebook in 1987 from Handwoven Press for $12.00.

I don't know if she or the shop is still in Oregon.

Thanks smw - it seems she was as of 1995 when this book was published. There is an address in Portland and an invitation to send feedback. There is also a receipt for this book made out to the previous owner in 1996 with a sticker from "Aurora Silk" as well as another biz in Portland "Hemp can Save the Planet" , Frank Williams Hemp Co. The receipt is for $42, but it seems there was a surcharge because he paid via credit card!

I just found this, I will go so more sniffing around.
