Looks like PayPal extortion to me! Here's what happended:
Auction closed 12/23. WBN sent 12/24. With no word from buyer, sent a reminder on 12/27. Still no response from buyer, so I sent the NPB alert to ebay on 12/31.
Today, I get an email from PayPal telling me that the buyer has paid through PayPal and essentially that to receive my payment, I'll have to register with them.
My TOS mentions cash, check, money order, or cashier's check as means of payment. Nothing about PayPal.
Here's what I think I'll do, give the buyer the benefit of the 10 day workout period after the NPB alert to workout in their mind to follow the TOS.

Looks right to me too.. And it brings to light that I should place my blurb about not accepting Online Payments at TOP of my listings, instead of at BOTTOM.
So far, never have had the problem, but it's coming, I'm, sure... Gosh Shosh!

Worth a try but won't stop someone who doesn't read.
All our auctions clearly say that payment must be recieved with in 7 days from end from EOA (if that happens to be a weekend or holiday we give them 10 days). Last month we ended an auction and sent 4 EOA notices. No reply. We NPB alerted and were about to cancel the auction and neg the buyer (he had up to now a good FB record) when the buyer emails that he was on vacation.
Now think about it. You bid on an auction that's going to end in 3 days, the TOS clearly says payment is due in 7 days, but this guy goes on a 3 week vacation! What did he expect us to do? Hold it open forever??

Yes. And much of the time it has nothing to do with not reading.
Sometime back there was a thread on this board regarding outside-US bidders who admit to reading "No bids outside US" and bid anyway, and bidders (sellers themselves) who read "Payment within x days" or "Sorry, no checks" and again, do just what they please.
Obviously there are going to be an arrogant few who feel that either the rules don't apply to them, or that the seller in question is SO desperate to sell his merchandise (even at a loss) to this particular bidder that the seller will twist himself into a pretzel just to accommodate them.
IMHO, in that case TOS are there for the seller to point to and say "Sorry, these are the terms I set before you bid" and to justifiably refuse to sell to that bidder, if in seller's discretion any accommodations aren't worth the trouble, without bidder being able to whine "But you never TOLD me!!!". Um, yes I did; now go play somewhere else.
Stick to your guns, bowtie. Unless you will neverevereverEVER get another bidder on this merchandise, the sale's not worth risking the Paypal trap, which is the domino theory in painful action.

I have had bidders send me payment requests from PayPal and Exchagepath instead of paying, with a note like, "Sorry my payment is late." That's anoying!

Send then another email and let them know that you do not accept PayPal and that they have to retrieve the money and send you one of your specified ways of payment.

I put that I accept Visa and Master Card in my auctions. I get about 3 or 4 buyers a week that assume this means paypal, and beam my payment before I even write to them.
When I tell them I don't use paypal, I have to say I have never had one whine or insist yet.
I try to stay optimistic and take the view that they are at least trying to pay.

Is this Paypal extortion as well? Auction ended 12/14 on a BIN. Buyer emails airily telling me she pays by Paypal which now accepts international sales (my TOS does not include Paypal). I remind her of my acceptable payment methods; she says alright, send a Billpoint invoice, which I did. The invoice has now sat there since Dec. 15 without payment. (I note she has paid for her paypal auctions which have ended the same week). Sent a NPB alert Dec. 30 and she emails saying she has tried to pay Billpoint but her bank card was not accepted and she won't be making any deposits till Friday (what has this got to do with credit cards?). I get the feeling she is deliberately withholding payment because of her insistence on using Paypal. I'd like to void this auction in view of her behavior and late payment; should I or should I just wait till the 10 days are up and FVF?

No reason you have to make your own situation worse. The NPB doesn't bind the seller to hold the item for 10 days - in fact it actually warns the bidder that seller doesn't have to do that. If I were you (and I've been down this road) I'd relist the item, and then IMMEDIATELY email her that the item's been relisted, that you will no longer accept payment from her, and that she is not to bid on any of your future auctions. Then CC Safe Harbor to make sure she doesn't rebid on the item (which has happened to me).

Why not just simple to accept Paypal, it is fast and easy way to deal.
My auctions only accept online payment, no money order, and no check!

I just cannot reccomend PayPal. I had an account from June to October 2000 when I closed it. Well today I got an email that they were doing a "Pending Reversal" of a Payment made to me by a buyer because the person is suspected of Fraud. No name or date was given, they just said check your PayPal account to see which transaction this is about. I don't have a PayPal account. Beware PayPal.

LOL, well, people do not read.. even my own MOTHER is guilty. I recently asked her if she'd use her CC to pay my eBay bill, and I'd just give her the cash, since my X.COM card is no good and I have no other CC and a snail mail payment to eBay takes way too long. So, I sent her a link to the "one time CC payment" eBay page and explained everything thoroughly. I told her she needed to either go and make the payment with her CC info herself, or call me and give me her CC info so I could do it.
Also, a couple months ago I explained to her quite thoroughly why I was closing my PayPal account and mentioned it the day I did it. She got outraged right along with me with PayPal's practices, and agreed to close her account as well, but "after Christmas" as she was doing a lot of auction shopping at the moment.
What does she do? Sends me the money, via PAY PAL!!!!! With a note to use this to pay my eBay bill! LOL!! I had to explain to her that eBay itself does NOT take PayPal for seller fees.
So if I can't get a simple idea across to *her* (and my mom is not a stupid woman, I swear.. but flakiness does run in the family a little) then I don't know why I foolishly expect the majority of bidders out there to have a higher ability to comprehend what they read!
