I'm going to sound like a real simpleton here - does anyone know the steps/process to do a COD order? I've agreed to send something COD, and I really don't know what to put for the costs/shipping costs/etc. on their invoice.

As you can tell, this is my first COD and I am truly clueless.

Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks!!

Hi Barb! First, let me get this out of the way...I wouldn't EVEN send COD! Ok, thanks, now you would want to include the shipping cost, the COD charge, and the amount that the buyer is paying for the merchandise. If you are using UPS, the form pretty much outlines where you put all the info. You also need to be sure to specify what kind of payment you are willing to accept. (i.e. money order only, or whatever)

If you are using USPS, you could check usps.com for forms & rates. Sorry I don't know as much about sending cod by usps because I've mostly done it with ups.

Hope this helps! shark

If you choose to do so (bad choice, in my opinion, DO NOT do it through the post office. You cannot specify money order or cash only, and the buyer can pay with a bad check. You are then out the money, the item and the shipping. A second reason, is they buyer can have second thoughts while it is enroute, and never claim the package, leaving you out the postage AND COD fee.

But, if you must, go through UPS. There is an extra fee (which your buyer should pay), and you can specify the payment terms you will accept. It is not a big deal, just some papers to fill out.

Good luck.

Depending on wether you have an account (and the terms of oyour account) COD is an extra $5-6 using FedEx or UPS. USPS bases their rates on amount collected.

You're in Canada, correct? You best check with one of the courier companies.
Unless you're shipping to a Cdn address.

Just about all of my orders I recieve by C.O.D. as far as my products...

If you must, do it through UPS
USPS had a bunch of boneheads who might not know how to deal with a cod. And they can be persuaded to bend the rules....also you can't stop them from taking a check......or a bad check

All UPS drivers know how to deal with them and they can't be scammed by a customer. If you say money order then DAMMIT they will not get a damn thing without a money order for the exact amount assigned to the package.

USPS doesnt particularly care
UPS doesn't play games

If you need to do cod UPS all the way.

Hi Reddeer & all -

Yep, I'm in Canada, and it is going to a Canadian address.

I had never done a COD, so when the buyer requested it, I had no idea of the cost, how to do it, etc.

Well, I found the costs (finally) in the Canada Post site; first of all, it has to go parcel post, the cheapest being about 8.00, then there is a 6.00 COD charge, bringing the total shipping cost now up to $14.00.

Now the REALLY funny part - this is for a $2.00 item where shipping would normally be $1.00. Why would anyone in their right mind request COD for that???

I am definately going to discourage the buyer from proceding like this. I do offer COD on my website, but at the time I didn't know the cost (or even how to do it! *sheepish grin*) - I'll have to add the cost to my website so folks know!

I still think it would be worthwhile to offer COD for large orders (i.e. wholesale). But I will take everyone's advice, and use only UPS for that purpose.

Well, I hope that made sense, because I'm so tired I'm doing the ol' forehead smash against the keyboard..... it's off to bed.

Thanks again, all!!

Don't ever use COD. Don't even think about it. There is absolutely no reason to do so in the 21st century. If someone really wants it, I would tack on a $25 surcharge over the expenses which would eliminate any requests.

Do not do a COD!!! UPS no longer take Cash for COD's! I did a COD and it took UPS almost two weeks to send my check- It was a check from my customers business. Luckily he was like most people on ebay- honest. But had the check not been good I'd been out the $100 for the item $15 shipping AND the $5 COD fee. COD is simply too risky.

Prepare for the worst but hope for the best!! Spuddy98

I just did my first and (hopefully) my last COD ever... to a wholesale customer for a $126 order. The USPS charged $6.50 for this service... I can't believe my buyer would want to pay this!! I had to wait 2.5 weeks to receive the buyer's CHECK (is it good??), which just arrived yesterday.... Prior to this I was wondering where my payment was, and the USPS was just clueless regarding helping me find my payment!!

So I concur with the popular train of thought here... don't do USPS!!! And don't do COD!!!
