I know this has been dealt with before, but I guess I wasn't paying attention. Tonight after an auction a lady walked up to me and handed me - free - a box of old "Workbasket" magazines, from 50 years ago or so, up to 1970s (I've just peeked in the box; who knows what else is in there). Trouble is they reek of cigarette smoke. Any way to get them fumigated?

Haha,
Stick them outside on your porch and let them air out. I think just letting them air out is the best way to get rid of the smell.
You could always list them having a vintage smoke smell to them. Haha!

Dont let them get wet or moist if you put them on the porch. You'll end up with a must smell on top of the smoke smell.

That would be bad. Imagine sending someone a Smokey & Musty smelling booklet. Wow.

Wow,
Who would have thought - Kitty Litter!
I used to have to clean it when I was younger and had a cat. Now I can't stand the smell of the litter. I just avoid that now.

This is a really good link. Go about half way down the page. I think under, "caring for your books"

Sorry Alex, but it is not phrased in the form of a link.

I have done it pretty successfuly by putting in a plastic bag and an open box of baking soda ,for a few days to a week . Shake up the baking soda box, occassionally.

I work in a Used & Rare Bookshop. We used kitty litter and it works very well to remove that musty smell of old books. Just remmeber to surround each items indiviually and do not pack it down, keep it loose. We use big plastic storge bins. And if you are owned by a cat, KEEP THE BIN TIGHTLY COVERED!!!

This is the kind of thing I love about this forum. I would have thought of the porch thing (not this time of year as I have 8 inches of snow outside) and the baking soda thing but never the Kitty litter thing. Probablyl one of those better brand that advertise the low odor. I hate that Cigarette stench. I bought a polaroid camera that had been sprayed with that cheap deoderizer that they use in public bathrooms. What a horrible combination it made. I was very unhappy but the odors evertually went away after I let it sit for a few months. (Just think if I had held it to my face to make a picture. ugh!!)

And thanks, everyone, for your advice. As usual, ebayers help fellow ebayers! Adele
