I dont know what all will think or feel about this Domain name for sure.

One thing I do agree with you on is that the .coop is a great idea but to be sucessfull any one would still at this point in time have to lock up the .com .net .org as well and make them froword to the main portal at the least.

The other exts will help the net exspand but its going to take year to make these house hold words through advertizeing like .com and .net have become.

It's not catchy, and sounds perplexing.

The domain extension .coop will be operational soon. The names are only available to coops. If things can get organized before the names are released, there is a possibility of acquiring names like:

Auction.coop
Bid.coop
Buy.coop
Sell.coop

But......

Things need to move, as these domains will only be available to established coops and can not be bought by individuals.

Actually ... "coaxial cable" is what you hook up some electronic components with.

doesn't do a thing for me.

Some suggestions for name picking:

1. not too long
2. if someone speaks it, you know how to spell it, and vice-versa (very important)
3. doesn't have bad connotations/meanings in other languages
4. unique or catchy if possible
5. not easily confused with similar names (goto, go2, goneto, wentto, beento, etc)
6. doesn't infringe any trademarks
7. available in .com, .net, .org

IMO, it's okay on 1,6,7, fails on 2 and 5, maybe fails on 4, and I don't know about 3.

I'd like to see a short name that's fun to say like "Google" totally meaningless? Yahoo, Ebay, Amazon, they don't tell you anything either.

Let's have some fun with this!

Email me for our Online Co-op message board url. I'd list it here but I don't want to break any AW rules.

Morgantown -

I REALLY like it. It's got everything...catchy, short, easy to remember.

I really haven't been following the other co-op thread...thought it probably wasn't going to happen, but maybe I'll read up on it.

Have you ever heard of the word Coax?

It's short for Coaxial, thats the type of cable used for Cable TV.

I think you get lot's of TV techs wanting to buy cable.

How about

Some funny responses!

As I said, the offer is there. Or perhaps some cable company will want it! [laugh].

I am willing to donate my domain name biddersdream.com. Maybe too long? But easy to spell and the focus is on the bidder.

i think ideally the name should be one that someone instinctively knows how to spell (i.e. made up of words which are in common use). I think "auctionwatch.com" is a perfect example of this kind of name. the one you suggested is interesting, but it would have to be explained endlessly to people because it doesn't reference words used by them every day. "-aux" is not a typical abbreviation for auctions---or at least not one I have heard used by any auction user. "Auxpal" used it as well and I felt exactly the same about that name---not intuitive enough. Also, I don't believe the word-referent "coaxial" is a particularly good association for a site that is not primarily about electronics or related goods.

As an aside, most of the made-up-name internet companies are viewed as pretentious and are dying like flies...scient, etc. Check out f***edcompany.com for trenchant commentary on that conceit.

Easy to remember and about a senseless as google, but gets to the point! Even though its probably taken.

Ebay, Yahoo and Amazon were first in there markets so a name associated with the product wasn't necessary for them. A little known place just starting out trying to establish itself against the giants in the market needs every little bit of help possible.

I'd stay away from generic sounding names like bid.com; auctions.com- they have no brand value.

I agree the name has to be "fun"...

Just something I thought of:

Bada-Bid (Kinda like Bada-Bing?)

Morgantown:

When you say "make it available" to the co-op (should it come into being)---

do you mean for free (as your contribution to the co-op and it's 'member-helping-member' concept)? At your cost? Or are you hoping to be the first to profit from co-op members?

Just curious. I know you admitted that you were a domain name speculator- it's just not clear what your intent was to profit from this particular project. If so, I think that's unfornutate.

I agree that the name should be something short and fun to say.

Morgantown has made some great posts and has never mentioned trying to exploit the co-op.

Look folks, let's try and keep this positive and go forward.

What would you want the site called Magazine guy? What about fee's, services, structure?

Tell us, here on AW and on any other message boards.

And now, ladies and gentlemen, the STAR! of our show ~~~ Heeeeeeeeeeeeere's CANVID!!!!

I have kept up with the threads with much interest. I had succeeded in remaining neutral. Everyday I was one day closer to absorbing the miriad of information that has been presented in order to finally get involved and (hopefully) actively contribute my time and ideas to establishing the Co-Op. I don't fully grasp so much of what I've been newly exposed to but I'm trying.

I, too, was wondering if Morgantown's plans were to sell the name to the Co-Op but I was afraid to ask. What a pity. What's even more sad is, there is no amicable discussion allowed unless your comments falls within the window of the "privilaged". How the "privilaged" are appointed, I'm not sure but I think I have a pretty good idea.

I don't think I'm the only one who has been holding back until such a time that the lack of professionalism ceases and we can move forward in none other than a positive atmosphere. I don't think I'm the only one who gets tired of the twisting and turning of comments and people speaking up when a question hasn't even been addressed to them...

I don't think I'm the only one who has lost interest because what we should be embracing is dividing us.

Molly sorry if you've lost interest but I think others haven't? Why not suggest some ideas and help spark some interest.

Instead of focusing on personalities how about telling us what you want in a co-op?

It's not hard. I'm sure you have some ideas? Share them!!

We need to talk to each other, it's the only way we can go forward.

Sorry, that did sound a bit for-profit!

Should the CoOp want to use the names, all three would be my donation to a VeRy worthy cause...

Morgantown should be given a profit for her domain name if the co-op votes to accept it because she came up with it before there were any rules concerning the specifics of how and who should come up with the name and whether anyone should be compensated.

All duties have to spelled out and how those people are to be compensated. The co-op is really just a voting block of people, so any person who take the time to set up rules, comes up with domain name etc should be compensated, unless the co-op votes that no one should be compensated, in which case Morgantown could keep the name for themself and sell it to another co-op.
