I think using a palm pilot when garage sailing would be a fantastic idea. But I know nothing about them, such as do you need a modem? What kind of software do you need? Do they attach to a cell phone? What kind of internet access do you need? All I want to do is be able to access Ebay when out garage saling.
Anybody else use this? If so can someone tell me what I would need.

You would need a modem, yes - you could not plug it into your cell phone. You can buy modems for all the palms, except for the latest one (the Palm VIIx) which has one already built in.
All the software you could possibly need you could download on your computer and use the 'hot sync' that comes with the Palm to load onto your Palm.
As for internet access, you'd have to use the company you bought the modem from, eg, Palm Net - it's something like $49 a month.
Web pages are not displayed particularly well on the Palms - before you bought one, I'd suggest looking at one in a shop and seeing if you could see what an eBay page would like on it.
You might want to look at some of the Windows CE Palm Tops, like the Compaq iPAQ's, they do a better job of showing web pages, but don't do all the things that the Palm can do and there isn't as much software for them either - it just depends on what you would want to use it for mainly.

WHAT?!?! You mean I can use my Palm Pilot for more than just playing games?!?!
The info above is good...one thing to consider....walking around with a Palm Pilot at any kind of sale is like wearing a big sign saying, "Yes, I am an ebayer...please rip me off!" If you do use your Palm Pilot, keep the sucker in the car.
