For all the bellyaching over shipping charges; I'd like to return to the only sane concern of getting what you pay for:

THE PRODUCT

intact and in good condition and in a timely manner. Yesterday I received two packages, both containing expensive small merchandise. One was so securely taped closed that it took me five minutes to open. The other one was in a self-adhesived Jiffy envelope that was....

OPEN!!!!

Fortunately the nearly $200 worth of merchandise was still in there and it was ok. I sent the seller a note to the effect that I would appreciate a few pennies' worth of tape on future shipments.

Don't ever trust a self-adhesive box or envelope. Ever.

lol...

I once had a customer tell me that I should include a razor knife with my packages because they have so much tape.

Pocono- how would your buyers get the razor out of the package? I always keep my utility knife handy for eBay package opening.

This brings up a real sore point with me, and I don't exactly know how to fix it!

I buy antique silver and silverplate, and several recent shipments have arrived with the bubblewrap so securely taped to the item that I could not remove it without using a razor knife (I tried scissors first...they would not penetrate the tape). Despite my care, I managed to put a visible scratch on one piece of silver. This is not a disaster, but it is a great annoyance.

I also occasionally buy antique crystal, which can be very fragile. I have come very close to breaking a stem while trying to wrestle the taped-down bubblewrap off the item.

Please, sellers, think of the recipient! There is no need to tape anything so securely that it can be damaged when a person tries to open it. Use regular household tape instead of shipping tape or priority tape, if you must tape down the bubblewrap. Or use rubber bands (which I have seen suggested elsewhere).

sonsie:

I would rather have the buyer have a hard time opening the package than have them email me that it came open in the mail.

We use removable Scotch tape or rubber bands on the bubble wrap. The rubber band method works the best.
