For anyone who lives in a good-sized city, look for a local box manufacturer or supplier.
I buy from a local supplier whose prices for boxes, bubble wrap and peanuts are lower than ULINE (which also has a distribution center near me).
Also, for bubble wrap and peanuts, check some of the suppliers on eBay.

I get my bubble mailers from a seller on eBay. They end up being less than .25 each delivered to my door in just a couple of days!

auctionqueenie, good to know I'm not the only one who apparently pays a fortune for shipping supplies.

Have you ever tried Dollar General? or a Dollar type store? They are constantly getting in new merchandise and are more than happy to let you have all the boxes you can carry for free.
For peanuts, my Mail Boxes Etc. has a 20 cu. ft. bag for $29.00. (Bring a van to haul it in!)
Bubble Wrap, 3pack.com has excellent quality wrap at a great price, and they are fast.
For Priority Mail, you can get boxes, tape and froms delivered to your home for free, but you have to use them for Priority Mail.
On the www.Usps.gov website, go to:

Good Luck
Edited to fix my spellin....

The "weird dumpsters" are called balers. The bales of cardboard are then sold and recycled. Fortunately, it isn't really going to waste
(Doesn't help you any, but at least it isn't being wasted...)

I order my shipping supplies from www.quillcorp.com. Any order over $45 gets free shipping and normally I have my order within 2 days.

Hello!
I receive all of my boxes actually from many sources. Contact some local florists, grocery stores and maybe even your Kmarts etc. and see what you can work out ie. find out dates they receive their shipments. The better, lighter boxes come from the smaller business though and my absolute best source is my friends and family.
Peanuts are saved for me by a florist also. The only thing I have had to invest in is bubble wrap and that I bought at a wholesaler in HUGE rolls. The way costs are rising accross the board it is a selling advantage not to charge so much extra for shipping.
Good luck!

My problem is that I have too many boxes. Since I ship almost everything priority, I get all the free boxes I need from USPS. But my suppliers ship to me UPS and I wind up with a room full of boxes. NY City, is its infinite wisdom decided that they want to pretend they are recycling. To make sure that no one is actually able to do it, they came up with a bunch of stupid rules that require I take on another job of becoming a full time recycler. I have to cut up all cardboard boxes and tie them with string. Did you ever try to cut up a hundred shoebox-size boxes and tie them with string? It's practically a full-time job. I tried doing something logical, like cutting up the small ones and putting them in one larger one. But no - sanitation wont take them that way and give me tickets besides. I have to spend hours making them nice for the compactor. So now my options are to find someone who can use these boxes or to rip off all identifying labels and dump them somewhere. Anyone near Kennedy Airport is invited to contact me for free boxes.

For bubble wrap - eBay! Did a little research, and there are sellers on eBay who sell small and big bubble wrap for about half of what the supply companies charge (yep, I factored the shipping into that).
Haven't had to buy boxes or peanuts yet as I get them for free from local retailers.

For padded mailers check out atyouroffice.com
you can buy all different sizes at great rates without having to buy in bulk. I found the best deal on bubblewrap and peanuts was from looking in the yellowpages under packaging supplies (I think) and the guy delivered it to my door and it was much better price than anything I can find on ebay.

I get my smaller size boxes from Uline. My bubble wrap and bubble mailers come from www.123pix.com. 123pix are very fast to ship and have excellent prices.

I don't know about boxes, but it has been said here before in other threads, but I have to concur, shippingsupply.com on ebay is the best! I pay about .19 per bubble mailer of the 6X10 size - with shipping figured in!

I have found that Paper Mart is a great supplier of packing supplies. If you live in the So. Cal. area you cannot beat the next day delivery with free shipping on orders of 300.00 or more that they offer.

Why did they keep this string going when they banned the originator? I thought it was against their rules for the posts to remain?

Hi
Try UPS for free peanuts. I stopped in to their main shipping office where all the trucks load up and found peanuts in large bags being tossed out.
Hope this helps,
Jeff
