First a little background info. Back in mid-November, I had the winning bidder send me a personal check for an auction even though my auction explicitly stated "no personal checks". Since I had the check in hand, I made an exception, waited for the check to clear, the shipped the item Priority Mail. Today I get an email from her that she hasn't received the item. It's been three months and she finally notifies me that she didn't get it! How do I handle this?

Go to the post office and have them trace it. Let the customer know you've started the process. That's all you can do.

I offer the chance for them to buy insurance. If they do not want it then it is their problem. I would not worry about it. You are not responsible for the USPS. Even if you use delivery confirmation, if it is delivered to the wrong address then there is nothing that can be done. That has happened to me. I won an auction the item had delivery confirmation and it was never delivered to me. All they do is scan the package when they leave it at an address. It is to be delivered to my address so even though they delivered it somewhere else it shows they delivered it to me.

Thanks to everyone who responded. This whole transaction was a little fishy to me. It took three emails and a threat of reporting for non-payment before she finally responded to tell me payment had been sent. The strange thing is she has an excellent feedback rating. Unfortunately I no longer have her address or the receipt from the post office. This was one of my first auctions and I didn't quite keep good records. Live and learn.

I keep everything. Final Auction notice, email where they say they are paying and it has their address and either the insurance receipt or the USPS payment receipt. When the auction is finished I staple them together and put them in a file and keep them. It takes a lot of paper, ink and room but it is well worth it. 3 months is a long time and if it wasn't delivered and taken back to the USPS they would return it to sender.
