The Goodwill Industries in a neighboring county is having a large used book sale soon at a local mall.

Has anyone ever been to one of these? I'm wondering if it is worth it to go because I have not often found good resellable books at Goodwill stores in general. Well, I did find one ex-library baseball book that ended up selling for $50.00, but that was the exception not the norm.

If you want to have first crack at the books, there is a $10.00 admission fee. Otherwise, you can enter 3 hours later for free.

Any opinions or advice?

I haven't been to a Goodwill mall sale, but I regularly buy books at local Goodwill Outlets all over the area I live in--and resell them for an average of $20 to $30 per item. If it was me, I'd be there an hour before the doors opened with a crisp ten dollar bill in hand.

I find a lot of good books at the Goodwill so it probably would be worth your while. The goodwill gets a lot of media guides which do not sell for high money but they do sell especially the old ones. Check them close. I have also found autographed books. I wish our goodwill had those kind of sales. It takes them forever to put new books on their shelves.

I would take a twenty and a friend....My mother and I can cover trice as much area and get twice the amount of books ~ when we go to something like this, she starts at one end and I start at another and we meet in the middle. I also con other relatives into coming with us when the admission is not so steep and we each take a section and go. I have a sister in law with no interest in ebay that loves to help me treasure hunt.

All book sales, including library ones, are a calculated risk, especially when they charge admission.

It depends on what they charge per book and what they have. I certainly do not mind paying if the books are priced low enough for resale. So far I have done best overall at sales that cost absolutely nothing and the prices are a whopping .50 to a $1.00 for most books.

I find that Goodwill's selection of books is very overpriced to begin with, and picked over probably before they even hit the shelf.

In my area...it's a deal! Ours seem to warehouse books just for the sale...and the stores don't get much. Lots of good bargains to be hunted down.

Sounds like one I'm planning to go to in about 2 weeks. I don't know what I'll find, but it won't hurt to look

The Goodwill stores here are more like boutiques. Used t-shirts start at $8. They also have "consultants" to set their prices on incoming antiques and books. It's become so obvious that somebody's filtering out the good stuff before it's put out that I no longer bother with Goodwill stores. Ditto for Salvation Army.

My local goodwills are terrible for books. Very overpriced, picked through etc. And I live in a college town so I know they get books, just not books that are worth reselling (to me anyway). I have just about given up on them for things like that!
Thankfully it is YARD sale season! God I love yard sales!
Hope it is worth the $ if you do decide to go early. Sounds like it varies a bit depending on where you live.

If you are in Atlanta, go! The library there buys mega copies of all hardback books on the best seller list and sells them for $1 and $2 the next year. I've never paid an admission, but still had plenty to choose from.

I just got back from our local goodwill. I found some very nice books....until I picked them up and got a wif of em. They smelled like sh** and pee. I'd be blackballed for sure if I tried to sell those.

redskinfan-Don't throw them out until you try to eleminate the smell by putting them in unsented cat liter. Someone posted that here awhile back. As of yet I haven't tried it but they said it had worked. Good Luck

Throw them out?? I didn't buy the things. I left them at the goodwill store where I found them.

They just closed all 5 stores in the Detroit area. No surprise as nothing you would ever take home for free made it out to the public.

I'd be there with 5 of my closest friends and several boxes/bags to carry my goodies home in! But I live in NH, and most Goodwill/Salvation Army people do not pick through them. As a matter of fact, I have several contacts that let me know when the new books are going out. Things may be different where you are, but up here I find that most collectors/sellers still go to the antique stores in Maine (along RT 1) and in Hampton, along the beach front. I have found many treasures at Goodwill, and bulk buying is the way to go when you go to these. Plus, you may make a new contact or two...

I think it depends on the area while I do find occasinal books at goodwill for the most part they are high priced
The goodwill in my area lists books for sale on ebay.
They also will print out ebay completed auction pages and insert them in some books as justifaction for high prices
the key here is to find books they don't find desirable
