There is a man in South Africa with 1 feedback who won my auction for a big ticket item. He is wanting to pay by PayPal though I said I would not take PayPal from bidders outside USA. (The way I understand it I have NO protection from PayPal for sales outside USA.) Does anyone know if I have protection from Billpoint on a transaction like this. I'm worried about 2 months down the road they come back and say credit card was stolen and give me a chargeback. Then I'm out cash and the item.

For a high-ticket item sold to a bidder outside the US I always require cash in US$ or it's equivalent. But if your TOS states that you accept PayPal then you are required to take it (ethically, not legally) unless your TOS states PayPal for US customers only.

Of course it's your TOS and you can break it if you want as long as you understand and are willing to live with the consequences.

There is no protection against chargebacks PERIOD with Billpoint.

Maybe ask him to pay with Bidpay? That is safer for you.

OK, thanks. I stated in the auction that I took PayPal from USA customers ONLY. But now that the auction is over he's being very insistent about paying by PayPal. Thanks again for the help.

Why not use BidPay...no possible chargebacks? If you're making a lot of money on your piece, you could offer to pay the BidPay fee for the buyer, if he objects to paying for the Western Union money order.

Ok, I will check out bidpay. I've never used it before.

iwannabuy...

If you go with BidPay, I think the wise thing to do is wait until you receive the MO in the mail, before sending the merch...especially with a big dollar item. I've never had a problem, but best to be on the safe side, IMO.

I have used BidPay for international transactions, and if international bidder wants to use their credit card that is the only service I will use. I would be very leery of anyone who *insisted* that they get to use PayPal for an international transaction. BidPay is the only way to go.
