Can you help? I have a bound book of State maps from the 50's or 60's with some City maps and some Canadian Provinces. The maps were put out by Shell when gas was 6c/gallon plus 2c tax. The hard red cover has the Shell emblem on the front and there are index tabs for each map.

How do I auction this and where? Who would want such a thing?

Plenty of people collect gas station maps, but they usually want the ones from the 1950's and older. You book of maps might bring some interest though.

I don't know if ebay has changed the category, but there used to be collectibles/advertising/oil companies, or something like that.

Boo2Bear,

You should be able to get some interest from that book. I would try it in the following ebay category:

Collectibles:Transportation:Maps, Atlases: Other Maps

Good luck!

First, do you have a definite date for it?
You can date it by the map codes. I would post a link to a web site with the codes, but dont know if it is allowed here. Saerch for gousha or rand mcnally road map date codes.

Second, be very careful describing map damage if any. Map collectors can be picky!

Third, try cross listing it. Put it in Transportation, Automobilia, Maps, Road Maps, US.
And in Advertising, Gas, Shell.

Be sure to list any Shell products that are advertised in the booklet and/or on the maps.
If it has tourist info and pictures mention them too.

Start it as low as you can and hope for the best.

Suggested Title would be COMPLETE COLLECTION of SHELL OIL road MAPS 196X (If it is all the states.)

I had gotten a lot of old old maps in a box lot. I thought, who would want these old things? Well, they did fairly well. When I listed them I made sure I mentioned every bend and turn in the paper. Some of the really old ones had tiny tears where they had been folded, but it didn't affect the bidding very much. (I must have had something I didn't know about) Good luck on your maps.

Thanks for all the help. I think the maps are dated 1955 and like I said they are bound and indexed and no Alaska (big surprise!) They have to be sold en masse and they sure wouldn't fit in a glove box as each map has only one fold, I think. It is about 18 1/2" by 14". Some states are together, like Idaho and Wyoming.

Speed limit on the highways was 30.

It's a fun collection. I do need to get rid of the musty odor and then will give it a try.

Thanks for the help and I will search web sites as suggested.
