I received a Silver Dolar Coin Pendant, one of those carved pieces with negative space removed.

I know this may sound stupid and I'm 90% sure it is but, Are these Silver?

It appears to be so but I know nothing about coins. It is dated 1923 so it would seem logical to be silver.

Any coin people think this has any value?

Thanks in advance.

Silver dollars were minted until I believe 1935? After that, no silver dollars til Eisenhower, and those aren't silver (at least the ones meant to be used) - Any silver dollar before that are real silver (Well, 90% silver, 10% other metals) - 1923 would be a Peace Dollar, a nice coin!

There were plenty of silver dollars minted after 1935. Canada, for example, minted silver dollars many decades after 1935.

Any coin people think this has any value?

If it has been altered or modified in any way (cut, soldered, etc.), it has no value as a coin. It will still have whatever value an interested buyer might place on it as jewelry, and will also have value as bullion based on its weight (1923 dollars are 90% silver and 10% copper).

Yes, that is true about Canadian (or other countries) but since this is a US board (At least it is based in the US, I assume most posters here live in the US), and the person did not specify that it was not a US coin, I think that can be assumed they are talking about a US Coin

Yes it is an US Coin pendant carved out Sort of neat.

Sure since it's silver and decorative it should bring a few bucks.

Thanks for the help.

A 1923 Peace is worth about $4 unless it is one of the first crossovers from the Morgan to the Peace -- I forget how to tell. Silver and gold are both very low in value and mining of silver has virtually ceased in the US with the exception of one large mine in Idaho. Recently a large gold mine closed near Tonopah and gold is at near- historic lows along with silver when inflation is accounted for. A much simpler benchmark is that a good suit would cost more than $260 today. I wonder if that means Bush will quit wearing a suit?

Yes, this definitely has no numismatic value, but it does have real silver.

For most US silver coins before 1965, $1 in face value contains .714 ounces of silver.

With silver at $4.41 per ounce, that would make the silver value of this coin $3.15

However, it would probably go for more as jewelry than anything else!

Good luck,
Alan

A 1923 Peace is worth about $4 unless it is one of the first crossovers from the Morgan to the Peace -- I forget how to tell.

Morgans were minted breifly during 1921 after the replusion of the Pittman Act, when designs were switched over to the Peace Dollar in late 1921.

The 1921 (and reportedly some 1922) mintage had a much higher relief than other Peace Dollars in the series.

What that the info you wanted??
