Hello all,
I am trying to send 35lbs. worth of books overseas through the USPS, and I was just wondering if there was anyone here that knew what heading of mailing it would fall under....."media"?
If i can't send it media overseas, would someone please tell me of the cheapest (but not the slowest) way to sent it? Would UPS be cheaper?

I think you might want to look at M-Bag. Go to the USPS site & search on "M Bag" and it will tell you the rates & conditions. You'll need Adobe to read it.

I looked into the "M-Bag" and it looks like it's a no-go. They want $16.50 for the first 11 pounds and then $1.50 for each additional pound.
At 35 pounds, it would cost a small fortune.

In another life I had the pleasure(?) of sending a whole library to an American academic center in Amman Jordan.
(You don't want to know how much paper work I filled out for Jordanian Customs). Anyway I researched ways to get the books overseas and the best and most economical was DHL. They are helpful, the rates were reasonable, they pick up, and they are very reliable.

if you go with International Air or Ocean freight it has a funny way of figuring shipment cost.
International Air and Ocean freight is billed by the higher of either the actual weight or dim weight. Dim(ensional) weight is the space the shipment will occupy.
Example: The actual weight is 150 pounds. The size of it is 3 feet (36”) x 3 feet (36”) x 2 feet (24”), this makes the dimensional weight 187 pounds; (36 x 36 x 24 = 31104, 31104 / 166 = 187). The rate would be for 187 pounds.
I don't know why it is divided by 166. I am sure there is a reason, but I just know it is 166.
Sorry, UBB put that stupid blue face in somehow. I can't get it out. The area code is 415. I hate UBB.

Are you sure you requested the right M-Bag rate. It is the last option on the list after you access M-bags.
You should be doing this with the online International calculator. Too confusing to use the PDF file.

You ar looking at the wrong rate for M-Bag.
The $16.50 is for REGULAR M-Bags---and not the one you want to use
---but books get a different rate and is called
Economy (Surface) M-Bags for BOOKS-SHEET MUSIC and PUBLISHERS PERIODICALS-
Depending on where overseas they are going--you would be paying either $9.90 or $11.00 for the first 11 lbs and then either .90¢ or $1.00 for each additional lb thereafter. You should come in under $40.00
This info is on Page 10 of 'Global Standard Services'----go to USPS do a search that

You get the bags and Labels from the Post Office---just box them up like you would normally (protecting them from postal clerks who like to heave 35 lb boxes to show off) and then it gets stuffed into the bag and you address the label---Viola!!!
M-Bag, which by the way does not stand for Mail Bag, but Meme Destinaire ( which is French for Same Destination)---because M-Bag use is part of the International Postal Union Agreement and French is the offical language for IPU (?)

I have shipped books to England and M-bag at the book rate is the way to go.
The PO has different size M-bags (a canvas sack). You can get two or three cartons into the large one.
But as has been said, pack them as usual, then put in sack.
