I regsitered here for the forum the other day and used my paypal debit. I noticed there was a "pending" charge for $1 from Aw. I assumed it would fall off and they were just verifying it was me.

Today it showed completed and paid!
Kinda scary.

I thought they were not going to charge for posting in here.
Whats up AW??

it should be reversed in the next few days.
it happens to my cable tv and phone company.
if it does not, just figure they need that dollar badly.
we must be weaned that there is no free lunch, why should anyone pay to maintain a system for us to chat and find information, when you go to a theater to see a moVie,is it free?
when you order in a restaurant,is it free?
is your monthly mortgage on your house, utility free?
do you work free??
if so,would you work for me FREE???

Don't worry about a pending charge, that is what happens when they verify. It will go away, as they will not close the transaction.

I don't know why PayPal does this. I have a fist full of credit and master debit cards like the rest of you and I never see crap like this. Pre Auths do not show on my account.

You would think it would cause them a lot les trouble if they quit putting them on like that.

Hi there - please don't worry, the $1 is an authorization only. It is not an actual charge and it will not appear on your credit card statement (if it does, please let us know!)

Thanks,

Diana

I used my Paypal debit card, a $1.00 charge went through from AW and then a corresponding $1.00 credit immediately after.

I kind of like being able to see everything that's pending just by going to the PayPal account and viewing it onscreen.

Okay, so WHY wasn't anyone NOTIFIED that a pending charge of $1.00 would be made against their credit cards when we GAVE it to AW?

I do not see it in the TOS or CG!

Your terms say we only need to place a credit card on file, NOT that we would be charged, PENDING or otherwise. NOR does it mention the amount.

You folks feel good about allowing AW to play around with your card, charge it for verification without telling you the amount, and then placing a credit? Seems like not too honest of a rule going on here.

for crying out loud!!!

try changing your credit card at ebay, you will see the same type of pending charge to verify that card is good. the charge does not actually go through.

some people need to join the real world!!

yourdesigns, I feel fine about it. That's why I posted my experience with the charge.

I have changed my credit cards many times on ebay and have never seen any charges against the card.

Also, why wasn't this stated by AW? I think that is a VALID and reasonable question.

Live in the real world? Okay, how about unauthorized charges by legitimate companies? Overcharges? Double billing? I guess those don't exist either.

AW should change their CG/TOS and state that a $1.00 charge will be made for verification purposes, but will not be completed or something like that. Let people know. Seems pretty damn simple to me to add a sentence to the agreement or at least in the Account Profile area that you entered the card number at.

I am glad you feel "good" about it. That is fine, but I also think that some honesty and UPFRONTNESS should come into play on AW part in the first place. If a charge, even for verification purposes, is going to be made, then a card holder has the RIGHT to know and not assume that everyone in the world knows how everyone else in the world operates.

Also talk about security, WHEW, I am glad to know all the fellow AW posters here can afford to have $1.00 on their credit cards. I feel safer knowing that everyone here has at least a dollar to their name.

Did anyone ever realize that you can't verify a credit card by asking for authorization of $0.00?

Honestly, the things some people complain about make me wonder if they have any sense of reality...

Only a dollar! LOL.

That was the original issue that drove me from Ebay and into reading AW boards.

Hey, enchanted! Remember that big brouhaha? I was one of those who thought it all a tempest in a teapot, but I sure do love that phrase! I use it every chance I get.

Hey there KatyD, we're finally here at the same time. Meet me in the RT later for some fun ...

I remember I was absolutely furious at Pierre's remark. I used a lot of reserve auctions at the time and it was really going to add up. Somebody saw my posts at the Ebay DNF board and emailed me to invite me to a chatboard that ended up turning into a competitor of AW's years later. That path led me slowly but surely to... AW where my eyes were opened to the wild west of online auction chatboards!

Is it pure coincidence that AW is charging us a dollar (credited back) in order for me to keep posting here? I think NOT!!

Where's my black helicopter conspiracy theory....

Actually in all Honesty AW said they wanted a credit card number for verification If you had used a visa or master charge depending most card companies wont show anytranaction or fee a few banks require At least $1 ammount that is returned to make verfication.

How ever you didn't even use a credit card You used a debit card and this is a whole different thing.

Debit card companies don't allow any verification of information for $0 tranaction.

It was not just about giveing them a card number the card number its self tells them nothing about you

Hello,

Well, I just checked again this morning to see if it I received the credit and it was not there. I know that it usually says pending and then will just drop of. HOWEVER, in this case it turned into "COMPLETED" and was taken out of my balance.

I know it was only a $1 and could care less about the amount. I guess I am uncomfortable with the fact that I was charged ( any amount) when we were told there would be no charge.

I am glad I used my paypal as I am I view it daily.

I think dman3 may have pointed out the problem. If you used a debit card as opposed to a credit card the transaction probably went through. The point being that debit cards don't allow for a pre-authorization of a sale, they only allow for purchases to be made if the correct balance is available in the account. There is a big difference between a credit card and a debit card.

I used a debit card from my bank, not from PayPal. I had $1 difference in my balance for a day and then it was gone. I was never actually charged. I don't think it has anything to do with the type of card. The charge shouldn't have been processed. Sounds like AW owes you a buck.

Yeah the dollar is usually returned as soon as it clears.

when you apply with Yahoo useing a debt card you get the same $1 charge that is returned in 1 or 2 days..

Well, sorry to burst your bubble.but I am not a troll.

I have used this forum under another id and changed it when I signed up on the 31st.

I do know how to use a paypal credit debit card and am not a newbie. I have been on ebay since 1999. I am a powerseller (big deal) with over 2500 feedback. All this to say I am no idiot!

I KNOW THAT THEY CHARGE $1 AND THAT IT IS SUPPOSE TO FALL OFF........IT DID NOT.

It looks like I paid a $1 to AW to post. Small price and I will live.

Have a great weekend all........

Hi tickledpink,

Are you sure the charge actually went through?

They never have before, and our records do not show that any charges have ever been applied to your account.

As other users mentioned, the PayPal debit cards are one of the only ones that ever show that verification test charge, and would not show up on a regular credit card unless it actually went through.
