Hi,

Anyone have any suggestions on where to go for good cheap web hosting?

Basically, I have a 4 meg account for free, but in trying to upload a few more files, I have gone over that limit. I don't need much space (20 meg should be more than enough for now).

I thought I saw somewhere that you could get 20 megs for free, and of course there were banners. But they offered an option of $1 per month to remove those banners. Anyone know where that is?

Also, I own a domain. If I sign up with a web hosting service, do I have to transfer my domain name under them? Or can I just keep it the way I have it now, and forward visitors to the site that I would sign up with?

Any help would be appreciated!

thanks

www.bigstep.com used to be free, last i heard is is 19.95 for basic.
then there is 49.95 for webhosting from yahoo.
with aol ,each email addr of an account gets webspace,if you maintain a homepage, you get more .
your internet service provider may get you more space, also costco, sam club etc also have some deals, your local phone company etc

I use dzones.com for web hosting. Their "basic plan" is $6.95/month for 30 MB of disk space, plus a bunch of email addresses, cgi capabilities, web-based control panel, and lots of other stuff. Their "plus plan" is $9.95/month for 75 MB disk space, and it goes up from there. I chose them after doing a lot of comparison shopping and I've been happy with them and with their customer service.

I've also heard good things about fatcow.com though I don't have any personal experience with them.

About transferring your domain name, no, it will stay with your current registrar but it's still the domain name you'll use for your web site. What you'll do is get the names of the nameservers at your new hosting company and you'll need to change that information with your domain registrar. It usually takes a couple of days for the change to propagate across the Internet.

If I have two domains...
Can I use one account to run both of them...

Or am I correct in assuming that I would have to buy hosting for each by itself?

Thanks for the help!

I would suggest Fatcow. I use them and I am very pleased with their service. You get 100MB a year for $100.00, plus domain registration. Anything "free" or "dirt cheap" is always very third rate when it comes to web hosting. Spend a little extra and get something good and reliable. Like the old saying goes "you get what you pay for".

You can't use one domain for two webhosts you have to tranfer the DNS of your URL to the new host or get a second domain if you have the .com and the .net or .org is still avalable go that route or come up witha different one..

If you have two domains and you want to have two separate web sites you need to have two web hosting accounts. However, if you have two domains and simply want them both to point to the same web site, most hosting services will do this free of charge (up to a certain number of domains... at least that's how the one I use works).

Some also offer a certain number of subdomains, like for www.mydomain.com you could have:

goodstuff.mydomain.com
auctions.mydomain.com
etc.

4 gigs of transfer a month
cgi stuff
Online control panel for anything you could possibly need to do or manage within your account.

Has anyone used or heard of hostwomen.com? I am also searching for a company and found them via a google search. 14.95/month 50 MB, lots of other stuff to include a 25 item shopping cart. Discounts given for quarterly, semi-annual and anuual payment. Just curious if anyone here has any ideas on them. Thanks in advance.

I use nomonthlyfees.com for my webite. Right now I think you can get a 500MB site with free domain name for $200.00 for the first year with no monthly fees to pay. I have not had any problemsin the 8 months I have been using their service.

Check out www.i1internet.net

$6.95 per month for 100 megs.

I am part owner the company and can answer any questions.

You can have two domain names point to one website but if they are 2 different sites than you have to have 2 accounts.

If you're looking for image hosting options, I have some web space I can let you use for free if 20 megs is all you need. I have 450MB free right now. Email me at [email protected] for details. (remove the .nospam when you write me).

I also suggest looking into pair.com which offers a $6 a month plan for just FTPing your image. They also provide static IP hosting for $1 more a month.

> If I have two domains... Can I use one account to run both of them...

Yes you can, but you have to point each domain to the root directory of your HTML directory.

> Or am I correct in assuming that I would have to buy hosting for each by itself?

You also use a "frame" redirect option which can point to yourdomain.com/account1 and another that points to yourdomain.com/account2 but frames are ugly in my opinion.
