If you had opened it, it would have told you he accidently gave you a virus and the way to get rid of it, would be to delete that .exe file. And once you deleted it, that would have been where your troubles started (since you need that file for windows). Deleting the email was the wisest thing to do! It's up on the hoax pages about this email.
