I know the very basics of sniping, but how does one go about doing it (other than manually)? What website can you go to? Are there costs involved? Is one place better than another?

Sniping is the wonderful sport of placing a bid on an auction in the very last few seconds.
For the folks who do it manually, there is the rush of "beat the clock" and the win. (To me, the guys who do it via an automated system just seem to be placing a proxy bid on a delayed basis.)
Anyway, there are folks who love to claim that if an auction ends at say, 19:45:13, they were able to get their bid in at 19:45:12. Some have even gotten it to match the auction closing time.
The thing of this is, if a few people do it on your auction, the final price can end up soaring in the last few seconds. You usually won't even know it happened until after the auction actually ends.

The best snipe is in the last ten seconds or so. If you aren't cheap on your bid, you'll do alright most of the time.

I use auctionsnipe.com. Free for the first 3 snipes, 25 cents a snipe after that, but only if your snipe results in you winning the auction.

AuctionTamer (BidTamer) also offers 5 free 10 second snipes per week, or you can purchase an enhanced version that will allow you to choose how many seconds you want. A great all-around program for managing your own auctions or keeping track of ones you bid on or want to watch.
