I have a customer in Canada that needs to know what the customs fees will be for shipping a guitar amp from the US to Canada via UPS Standard. Anyone know what the rates are? Any help or info would be greatly appreciated!

They can look it up on the ups website. It may vary as to cost.
I never ship ups to canada as the buyer can wind up with a hefty fee from ups customs broker.
Best to ship via usps as its a lot cheaper if you can.

All shipments coming into Canada are subject to Federal tax (7% of the declared total after converting to Canadian dollars) plus another 7 to 10% Provincial tax on the same dollar value. Then, the post office levies a $5.00 Canadian fee to collect these taxes.

If you ship via UPS, your customer will have to pay an additional fee (UPS calls this a "customs brokerage fee" and no other shipper charges this) amount that starts at around $35.00 Canadian.

My son just brought a Marshall AVT50H/AVT412A into Canada from the USA. It was sent via good old USPS and arrived safe and sound with no additional "customs brokerage fees".

There are no "customs charges" per se.

Hope this helps.

Trai & RB,
Thanks so much for your help! I usually ship via USPS when I ship internationally but this amp is a combo amp and is in two very large boxes One box weights 30 lbs but the other weights 85 lbs and is too heavy to ship through the PO. That's why I need to go UPS. Thanks for the info. I greatly appreciate it!!!

You may also want to think about FedEx or Purolator, neither of which charge the UPS graft fee. If you have to ship via UPS, make sure you buyer is aware of these extra costs.

The combo system that my son brought in was USPS'd in two separate boxes. I'm not sure if these weigh as much as the unit you are shipping.

Good luck

RB,
Are you sure that it doesn't cost any more than USPS for Fedex? I have a bidder that bids on my auctions a lot and always wants it shipped via USPS. I would rather ship the larger items via Fedex Ground but didn't want to if they will have to pay a large brokerage fee. Fedex ground is cheaper, faster and insured with tracking. If you don't know for sure then I might end up calling Fedex to ask.

Thanks

sapington ... I'm quite sure that FedEx does cost more than USPS for the seller, and that most of us are more than willing to pay the extra if the package is very large or we want faster delivery.

The difference is what the shipper charges the buyer at the other end. With UPS, the receiver has to pay their "customs brokerage" graft fee. As far as I know, no other carriers charge this. The last and only time I imported an item from the USA that went sent via UPS, it cost me an extra $35.00 (over and above the UPS shipping fee, taxes, etc.) when I picked it up.

I don't think a lot of Canadians know this (nor do many US sellers, it appears) and I am just trying to spread the word.

Fedex ground is usually cheaper than USPS for packages larger than a few pounds but they go by zone and USPS does not, so sometimes fedex is more.

If I had 100lbs to ship to Canada, I would check out Roadway. Roadway has terminals all over the US where you can drop off the shipment. They have a customs broker at the border and the brokerage fee is reasonable. Roadway may save you money on shipping but not on customs taxes.

I just looked up the cost at roadway.com
For 100 pounds to BC V1Z 1A9 roadway price is $271.23 and Fedex ground is $84.78
