I have been selling on eBay for more than 4 years and for more than 2 years I have used Paypal. Most customers pay via Paypal. Here is the problem. I made a large purchase with a CC through Paypal and never receievd the item. We're talking in excess of $1500. Paypal did not get my money back so I disputed with my CC and the charge was reversed. The problem is Paypal restricted my account and they forced me to pay back the money and they unresticted my account. Paypal provided a false shipping document showing that the item was delivered and the money was returned to Paypal. Now a month later, my CC company did a follow up investigation and found the shipping document to be false and have once again returned my money. The problem is now I expect Paypal in the near future to restrict my account again. All new listings now state no paypal.

The real question here is: Have any large volume sellers here discontinued using Paypal and have your sales been affected?

Thanks in advance.

We no longer accept paypal either.
They have screwed things up too many times for us and restricted our account for no reason once too!
Screw them!

One thing that might help is that you ofer Billpoint or another online payment service. We have had more people pay us with that....Also,it may be worth a shot to not hold your checks, that way if a customer pays by check...you can send the item right away...You do have to hope they don't bounce though
We have sold for around 4 years and probably on had like 3 people bounce a check.

Hello,

I have several powerseller friends I met at cardshows and many of them quit taking paypal long ago. I asked them about sales and they said no change in volume. The only online payment they take is bidpay, and they tell me since bidpays fees came down many more bidders are using the service. I have been selling since 1996 and never took paypal.

I do take Billpoint and do not hold checks. In 4+ years I had 3 returned checks and they were all made good on.

There is truly no seller or buyer protection with Paypal and it is becoming more of a problem then a benefit.

I just hope enough time goes by between now and whenever Billpoint is discontinued to get Paypal straightened out. I've also been thinking about offering a $1 discount for the people who purchase with a money order to offset the cost of the M.O.

I would not want to quit taking PayPal 80% of my sales are paid with them. Also as a buyer I try to bid on auctions that take PayPal. If an item I want is being sold by 2 diferent sellers I will buy from the one that takes PayPal. I would much rather pay a few extra dollars for an item that I can pay for right away with PayPal and not have to think about it again.

I'm a powerseller (roughly 400-500 auctions a month) and do not accept Paypal (or any other on-line payments). I take personal check, MO and cash only. I did take Paypal when they first started, then was quickly turned away from their service when I realized how poorly it was run. When I discontinued my use, I did not notice any drop in sales. Ultimately, I feel it is more important to have good products, descriptions, prices and service then it is to have an on-line payment method. My customer base seems to agree, so I will continue to stay away from Paypal.

I take PayPal, balance transfers & checking account transfers only. I've never had a problem.
I sell rubber stamps & most are under 10.00.

However, if I sold higher priced items I wouldn't take PayPal. All the troubles seem to involve large amounts of money.

Those sellers that have never taken or have quit taking PayPal can never really know what true effect it has or is having on their ebay sales.

I'm certain that many buyers look for sellers that offer PayPal and make them a prefered choice when multiple sellers offer the same item at about the same price. It is an intangible thing.

I'm a PowerSeller with multiple seller IDs listing and selling 1100 to 2000 auctions a month. We do not accept Paypal or any other online payment scheme that requires us to pay a fee.

In answer to the topic question: PayPal Not!

I don't agree.

I know that not having to process PayPal transactions for overeager I've-gotta-have-it-NOW worrywarts has made a huge difference in the quality of life around here. While seller happiness may not be directly quantifiable, I can sell you it's way up here.

Fact is, I wouldn't take PayPal *even if* eBay could guarantee it would generate 20% more sales. It's simply not worth the hassle of fees, frantic emails ("have you shipped yet? why haven't you shipped yet?", the inevitable chargebacks and the crappy PayPal customer service.

Judging by the email I do get, many people simply assume every eBay seller uses PayPal without reading the TOS. Some of 'em get downright nasty when politely reminded of our payment policies. So my guess is not taking PayPal hasn't made much of a dent, if any, on our sales.

Seyms:

What happened is I made several purchases from this person who regularly has a banner ad here on Auctionwatch. The seller provided a copy of an old completed transaction and Paypal accepted it without question. I was able to provide all the correct documentation to my CC company and it was clear to them.

By the way, the crooked seller that advertises here is Red Amazon Group and also goes by LearneBay. I'm sure you all have seen the banner ads for the "TV Shopping Channel" merchandise at 22% of wholesale.
