Has anybody else used KaZaA media? I stumbled on it while looking for software for my new Olympus camera, which I did find a twain driver - converts my usb to twain or something automatically. Unbeliveable what you can download over there! I now have Camedia master 4.0 and Adobe Elements! It's like shopping free at a store!

There is KaZaA and several other BearShare-type programs that pick up where Napster left off. Corporate America could and did bust Napster but KaZaA and the other services can't be touched near as easily as they squashed Napster. KaZaA for music downloads is getting very popular and with the new school year just starting it should soon be known to a lot more people.
I loved watching Corporate America gloat over the demise of Napster while the new technologies that were uncontrollable were just coming into bloom.
To keep this post auction-related, a couple of years ago there was a push by a few early adopters of the bear-share file sharing program for auction sellers to set up their own items on their own computers and not have to pay the ebays anymore fees. The premise is that the seller creates a section of his computer for his items and places them in folders and when people search for an item that the seller has they can download all of the item info including pictures and the price and s/h and then work out the deal with the seller via email. It was a bit too slow back then with the dialup modems but that hurdle is quickly going away with the proliferation of high speed access. If KaZaA becomes as mainstream as Napster was then ebay and the other auction sites have a very real problem rapidly coming into focus.

"No, it's called STEALING"--replaymdedia
LOL
I don't think I would want to use it for auction related items. But with highspeed Internet coming more and more popular
it could be an intersting way to sell items via the internet, of course with web space becoming cheaper that is a better way to go.
KaZaA is an ok site, but look around Neomodeus is also a pretty good site.

twelvepole- I'm assuming you are selling software or e-books or something that can be transmitted online. If not, just ignore the rest of this post as it won't apply.
I'm not sure how Kazaa could be useful for anything like that. How could you keep just anyone from downloading the stuff you sold? Also, isn't having the auction winner install the Kazaa software (with all the incuded spyware) an awful lot of trouble to expect a winning biodder to go through?
Wouldn't it be both simpler and safer to simply post your software on a private webpage and send the winner of your auction the "secret" URL? You could even use many of the free webhosts for this if you wanted to. It's not the end-all-be-all of security, but it would seem to beat Kazaa.
