While watching Survivor tonight what do I see but an advertisement for eBay. I was very surprised, but then ofcourse I shouldn't have been. Can eBay up fees and then also advertise? On most every program on TV or radio show today there is always a mention of ebay in some way or other. i.e. Wheel of Fortune about a month ago a contestant forgot to give back the free spin card. Pat Sajak came and got it and said I suppose you wanted to keep that to sell on eBay. Listening to local radio there was also a mention of selling on eBay. I think the American Citizens know about eBay do you think they have to advertise?

libra; Advertising is a normal part of doing business. It really doesn't have any affect on our fees. It comes off the other side, reducing profits & less taxes. It is smart business, & really is a help to us sellers by making a pitch to the unknowing public.

Ebay has a lot of fees we don't like.
But as long as they spend the money we give them to advertise and they do, It makes it money well spent.
Remember they are advertising our business not theirs, they don't sell anything we do!

There are a hundred auction sites out there and most of them charge some sort of fee to sell our items, do we sell on them? Very little because they aren't willing to spend that money we give them on making their site known to the general public!

At least we know a portion of our fees are working for us with advertising.

I smile everytime I hear ebay mentioned, if it brings just one more bidder to the site it is helping.

I wonder what a free spin card would bring if signed by Pat and Vanna? HMMMM...

"Advertising is a normal part of doing business. It really doesn't have any affect on our fees. It comes off the other side, reducing profits & less taxes."

When overhead, including advertising is higher, so is the price, or in this case, the fees. Don't be naive to think ebay is going to eat these costs especially being set on high growth projections, can't do that with lower profit margins.

"...if it brings just one more bidder to the site it is helping."

Not necessarily. If you pay say 5¢ more per listing and do 1000 litings, you just paid $50 more to attract that one extra bidder that 99.99% chance did not bid on your auction.

Even ebay would not benefit paying millions of dollars to make only a few dollars extra off that one bidder.

Everyone is entitled to my opinion.

I agree with hagey and rarriffle - eBay, keep on advertising! We need more buyers and curious people checking eBay out to see what all the excitement is about. Although a lot of people may have heard about eBay, they haven't really looked at the site to see the variety of "stuff" for sale out there. I told my sister about it, and she put "Pink Flamingos" in the "Find It" box. She said she was overwhelmed and intimidated by the hundreds of items that popped up, but that's her problem. We want people that get excited and start bidding when they search for whatever they want and see how much is out there!

I've seen the television commercial four times now, so they're really spending the bucks for a pre-holiday promotion of eBay. eBay is going to raise their fees regardless, so it's good to see them spending the bucks to grab more attention for us!

I had to laugh at the part "feedback so you won't get hosed part" with the firemen! Who writes these things? LOL

eBay needs the advertising to remind bidders that we are still here selling!
Would you prefer that those dollars go to Meg & the shareholders?
I doubt it!
They can spend it on ads.
AS for the freebies ~ I'll take an eBay plug in a sitcom or Wheel of Fortune anyday!
(although FearFactor may be more appropriate!)

eBay does sell something: venue and access.
