At its Oct. 30 analyst day, eBay said it's planning to expand beyond consumer-oriented goods early in 2003. It figures the market for industrial products, from restaurant equipment to medical gear, is potentially worth $1 trillion. At the same time, even in its top five markets -- cars, electronics, home products, fashion items, and sports -- eBay still has well under 3% of the total.

That's kind of like the statistic for gold. It is estimated that only 2% of the earth's supply of gold has ever been recovered. Mostly because the other 98% is too difficult or costly to extract.

That's great news for shareholders and for sellers who have the ability to source and market these industrial products.

But why haven't these products been selling on eBay up to now ? What is eBay going to change to bring these customers in ?
