I see people doing it all the time at the post office.
Many times people join a book or record club and quit yet continue to get the monthly selection. These people usually take the package back to the post office and they stamp it 'return to sender'.

If it has been opened you'll have to pay the return postage. I've seen some people cleverly try to slit the package open at a seam and look at the contents then tape the slit shut but that rarely works. The post office gets a lot of return to sender packages and they know when it's been opened.

Tooltimes and ahc3 are both correct, I was at the post office the other day and the clerk told the gentleman that if he had not opened the package, she wouldn't of had to charge him postage.

Just one point for sellers and buyers sending items to Canada from the US. If the item is refused it is sent back via a broker who will then send you a bill for abut $35. plus the postage to process the package.
I had two customers do that. One moved before he received the package and the other must have had an illness as I never heard from them again.
One question? Why would you buy something on Ebay, pay for it, then return it unopened?
