Help...my new puter with win xp is closing every time I go to make a change to an existing auction. Completely closes IE when I click on the "Continue" tab on the first revise page. Thought maybe it was the cookies setting...but I changed that and it still closes at the same point.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

You using home or professional XP?

Home has some serious problems so that could be it.

If you are using Pro, then check and see if you have Service pack 1 installed ( right click on my computer >>>select properties>>>> and right on the general page under the version it will say if Service Pack 1 if installed.

That could be part of your problem.

Thanks for your reply. It's the home version that I'm using and gee I AM excited to hear that it has some serious problems. Flippin oddest thing, click the continue button and bzzzip, there's my desktop and Internet Explorer has closed itself.

Possible solutions, anyone?

Thanks,
Scotch

Maybe to much Scotch could be the problem What I would do is go into IE and drop them a line and ask about your problem. I am sure they have a help line. Well not sure. Do you get a box where is says IE is closing or does it just shut down with no message? Next did you get a quick restore CD with your computer? Maybe you should just do a quick restore, that wipes everything out on your computer and puts it back to the original condition. Maybe DadofStickboy knows what your problem is. He seems very knowledgeable. Good Luck

Since both are Microsoft, try the Microsoft site for help, there maybe and IE patch or XP patch needed or both...

www.microsoft.com

Edited to add... try using another browser like Netscape or Opera and see if you have the same problem.

Hi:
Thanks for the nice word: Libra63, but I'm far from an expert!
I actually have no experiance with XP still running 98SE.

Ebays revise has always been a pain in the butt.

Here's a few things to try. No promises.

Click on HELP then ABOUT IE.
What version are you running should be at least 5.5 with SP2.

If not go to windows UPDATE and update.

If it's 6.0 go to UPDATE and down load critical updates that will put in 6.0 SP1.

If you already have the above mentioned go to TOOLS,INTERNET OPTIONS,ADVANCED,RESTORE DEFALTS,APPLY.

You may have changed something you shouldn't have.
If it works fine everywhere but the revise,It's more than likely nothing serious.

If XP Home has problems you should check updates regularly as it seems Microsoft doesn't fix their problems till after they have released an item.

Hope something above fixes your problem. If not call the Computer Co. and let them walk through it with you.

Here's another thought!

The only time my computer completely closes is when I get the message ( Have preformed an illegal operation) this is usually caused by having too many windows open at one time.

So after you visit the porno sites and all those windows open, make sure you close them before revising auctions!

Or drink your ScotchOTR after you list not before this will also cut down on revisions.

Hope I was able to help a little!

Oh so that is why I get an illegal operation. Thanks Dad. I try and close my windows when I am through with them but as I think back the last time I got one of those messages I had been playing games in gamesville (not porno) and you know how many windows you can get playing those games. I will be more aware of it now that you said it.

Libra63...
no such thing as too much scotch..hic

Actaully, as soon as I hit the "continue" button I get a quick flash of the "review" screen, then blip...no warning, just gone.

twelvepole...
agreed, there maybe a patch that I need. I'll do a check at microsoft.com. Thanks!

dadofstickboy...
Thanks so much for your time in responding to my dilemma. I'm at my office and not at the actual auction puter so will have to check the version later today. It's brand spankin' new so it SHOULD be the latest & greatest...but who knows.

Well we can rule out the multiple porn pop-ups; haven't been there or done that on the new puter.

But we can't completely rule out the scotchOTR and fumbly fingers : )

I'll post again when I either learn more or get it figured out.

Thanks again!
Scotch

If you're using some sort of pop-up killer program, you might want to check to see if it's closing your window.

It happened to me today. Every time I tried to open IE, I'd get a quick flash of it and it would close. I was getting kind of frustrated, but then I realized it was acting like windows my popup killer program automically closes. I checked my PK program and saw that "about:blank" had been accidentally added to the list of windows that should automatically be closed. Since I have a blank page as my home page it triggered my popup killer. Once I removed "about:blank" from the list in my PK program, IE started working.

Since you're seeing a flash of the review page, your popup killer my be closing the window. If you're using a popup killer turn it off and see if the problem goes away.

bkmunroe:

That sounds very possible.
I had a killer once, quit using it.
It wouldn't let Ebay open at all, not even the home page!

I have been using XP Home for almost a year without any problems. However, I will not use IE mostly because of the crappy security and virus problems. I do keep up with the XP patches. Both of my sons are degreed computer programmers and one, who will get his masters next month, specializes in MS product integration. Neither will have anything to do with IE.

I use Netscape 7.0. I know some people don't like it but I find that with an XP and either DSL or cable modem (I have both) it's just fine. My sons like Mozilla. I think one uses Eudora for e-mail.

bkmunroe!!

The pop up killer, that was it...THANK YOU! I installed the latest version of Zone Alarm on this new machine. Went crazy blocking every annoying thing that I could block. SHEEPSKIES, who'd have thunk of the Pop up killer actually KILLING IE pages when clicking a "continue" button? Not me...

Well it works now and another thanks to you and to the others who offered their input.

Think I'll go pour a tumbler of Scotch on the rocks...just to celebrate.

Scotch
