My elderly aunt's eyes are getting pretty bad. She still wants to read the newspaper. The magnifying glasses that she finds aren't strong enough. I have been browsing Ebay and it seems that they are all 2 and 5 power. Unless you go to a jeweler's loupe, which just won't work for reading books and newspapers. Any ideas?

Macular degeneration. Had 8 treatments. Then another blood vessel burst. Any one know of any higher powered magnifying glass? The standard Kmart, Walmart, etc. aren't strong enough. The ones on Ebay appear to be only 2x and 5x. Any suggestions?

Try a good, scientific optical supplier. A really good one is Edmunds Scientific at edsci.com. If they don't have it, you won't find it on the web.

I have a lighted magnifying glass that I use for soldering pc boards out on my workbench as well as one in the house for examining hallmarks and other fine detailed objects. It is basically a 5" diameter lens with a circular fluorescent tube in a reflector shade which surrounds the lens. It's mounted on a spring loaded adjustable jointed arm which clamps to a table or desk. I can just push it out of the way when I'm finished. You should be able to find one at Walmart or any hardware store.

kasue, if you do a search for "visually impaired" you will get a listing of helpful links. you can also check in your local phonebook for the association for the visually impaired in your area.

my older sister was blinded at the age of 4 and we had the need for many of these type items.

one link I found that sells many different magnifiers is;

good luck to you.

Not an eBay item, however my wife's aunt has the same problem. She bought an optical viewer which magnifies things and you read them off a tv like screen. I think she got it from the foundation for the blind, it cost a couple grand but the lady says its worth every penny. Magnification is only part of the problem you need something that has a powerful white light as well.

For 30 years, I worked with LOW VISION AIDS, assisting patients with AGE RELATED MACULAR DEGENERATION (ARMD).

Here's a link to my favorite resource for ARMD & LVAs:

You need oodles of patience & determination to make the most of aids

Best of luck to you & your aunt!

I want to thank everyone for their ideas and links. I was able to become more familiar with what aids are available and to explain them to my aunt. I have sent for more information about some of the magnifiers, and when that comes we will ask her eye doctor for his opinion about what have chosen. She is in excellent health and pretty darn agile for being in her middle 80's. It has been very frustrating for her to not be able to read books or the newspapers and having to rely on the television. Thanks again. I really appreciate your thoughtfulness.

I am sorry for your aunt. I have the same problem. I am partially blind in my right eye. The degeneration hit directly in the center of the retina. There is nothing that can be done to correct this. My left eye is still pretty good. I have a magnfier that is made of plastic. It is much like the magnifiers you see in the rear windows of RV'S. Works pretty good for me. I have 4 more yrs on my DL, don't know if if I will be able to drive after that.
