I mailed 6 heavy kid's books Media Mail last Wednesday with Delivery Confirmation knowing my niece and nephew would get them after Christmas.
I couldn't believe the package arrived in Cincinnati (from DC) Sunday and was delivered to very rural Indiana yesterday, Monday.
A first class I sent the same family Friday also arrived yesterday.
Packages to California & Michigan, with DC, arrived the third day.

Yep, same story here. The USPS must be busting their butt, some packages I mailed last Saturday, got there on Monday!

It may be more of a case that much less is getting mailed this year then compared to past Christmases. There was hardly any Christmas rush at all this year at my local post office.

actually, they said on the news today that mail order shopping was at an all time high this year as compared to shopping at the mall.

For the most part, I avoided the P.O. like the plague this December. I paid a few extra cents to mail from a local mailing outlet and saved myself AT LEAST a half hour everyday!
What baffles me is when I see someone with an armload of presents pack them all in one box and spend $50+ to ship the gifts! You could almost hop a flight and hand deliver for that much dough. I can't imagine throwing that kind of money away and would just assume give gift certificates. That serves two purposes--they get the gift they want the first time (no returns) and the sender saves a few, or many bucks.
I know the whole idea is to get a wrapped present but with the postal rates these days, it's so impractical!

I use UPS almost exclusively. I have had very poor luck with the USPS.
Example: At the request of a customer I sent a Next Day Express package on 12/23 with a "guaranteed" delivery by 3PM Christmas Eve. Not there yet and their tracking service shows only that it was mailed.
No Thanks! UPS is much more reliable and their trakcing service is far superior to the USPS. IMO
