This is just a little note after going to the post office, I received a payment with just a Money Order and an address. I have no idea what auction he won or what the Payment is for. Do you all have the same problem and if you did, how did you fix it.

If there is an address, can you not go through your auction emails and find which one it is for? You may have to bring up some buyer contact info to find it. My worst one was an envelope with a $10 bill, nothing else, not even a return address on the envelope. I had to eliminate some transactions, and then write to others before I found the sender. I think that some buyers think they are the only ones who have won one of your auctions!!

amber,

I tried that, and he never sent me an e-mail nor gave me any information regarding eBay Checkout. The only way I can guess is by searching for the Zip Code. I found a Match, but I can only hope that it is correct.

So true! Along with incomplete payment details, its the same issue when buyers ask you questions about a product without tell you what item it is for.

These type of issues can be reduced by asking buyers to print out the confirmation e-mail if they intend on using paper payment. But if the buyer forgets to ready, here are some suggestions:
1) Match up the total amount with your recent listings
2) Does the buyer name reflect any of your recent eBay names?
3) What city and zip code is the postage cancelled from?
4) Other sellers just hold on to the payment until the buyer tells them why their item has not shipped
5) Point buyers to this AuctionWatch article on Sending Payments

my worst has been a smart a** who didn't like giving info out over the internet...said I would have address with payment...got a money order and couldn't read the name or the return address on the envelope...I cut out that part of the envelope and taped it to the box...it came back to me in a couple of weeks and it took another two weeks for the buyer to ask where the item was...he finally emailed his address.

These go right along with the buyers who write and say "I won your auction, please give me the total" Oh yes, well I had 20 auctions closing tonight, like to give me a clue as to which one you won????

And that goes along with I won your auction, can you give me a tracking number and the e-mail is from another e-mail address that is not registered from eBay

It's happened to me several times. Luckily I don't list too many things at one time. That's one drawback of the internet, any moron can get on it, but still be too DUMB to use it.

If there was no auction number on the money order, how do you know it was payment for an auction? My guess was that it was a promotional gift from Seagrams or Jack Daniels distillery to use to try one of their products. The hard part is trying to decide which...

Jack
That would be my choice too. But to be on the safe side, and be fair to all, he should go for one of each

the USPS actually shipped it without a second charge since the first address was marked undeliverable...when i took the email he sent to the PO, they put that address on the package and reshipped.

thchaser--you'll find out who it is soon enough when he negs for not shipping out his item

classicrock000: Actually, these "mystery payment" folks rarely seem to have their act sufficiently together to neg a seller for not shipping. I don't think I've ever gotten one, and I get mystery payments every day.

I make a copy of everything that came with the check or money order, then cash the payment. The copies go into my mystery payment file, and either I will or will not hear from this person. Either way, I'm subsidizing their carelessness by holding the item for weeks, sometimes months. I could have turned my investment on it several times by the time some of these Rip Van Winkles wake up.

Matching auctions by amounts doesn't work because we run so many auctions.

AW's self-appointed moral compasses are now going to tell me it's not right to cash a check if I haven't shipped anything. To which I say: Nonsense. Real-world companies do this all the time. Your utility company, for example, has a bookkeeping account specifically for unapplied payments; that is, funds that arrive without an account number or customer name.
