I was up late the other night with my Daughter (2 1/2 years old and cuter then can be, thank you). She has a bit of a chest cold, and it was keeping her up (which ment that I was up too). I was doing the daddy thing, changing the channel as fast as I could looking for something interesting to watch, when I saw an infomercial that made me sit up (and nearly drop my daughter). Some guy is selling a "How To Make Your fortune On Internet Auctions" kit. You too can make up to $15,000 a month selling stuff in your garage, stuff you find at garage sales, and their Drop Shipper's stuff. Now, I don't know much about drop shippers, but my understanding is that there is not very much money to be made selling that stuff, since nearly anyone can sell it. I do know that selling $15k a month in 5 hours a week will be pretty hard to do. I mean, how many months can you sell 15,000 items for $1 each and ship each and every one of them. Well, now it looks like every ninny with a boob tube will be selling on Ebay... All I know is that I grossed about $10,000 last year, and I put in almost as much time, and more sweat and heartache then I do when I teach Middle school in South Central Los Angeles...

Well, you know the old saying: "If it looks too good to be true, thats probably right." Another scam artist at work. I really don't think this is going to make a very big impression in the number of sellers. I ususally put in 3 to 4 hrs daily, setting up auctions & packing & shipping. I gross about $1000.00 per month if I am lucky.

They are selling a dream just like so many other info commercials. Just watch the get rich buying and selling real estate with no money etc etc..
Its so much easier to sell "how to books" than running auctions.

Whenever I go looking for things to sell, I ALWAYS look for any of the "get rich", "have a better life" videos, DVDs and audio tapes by the same guys that are on those infomercials. Why? because it makes a good profit on eBay.

Too bad we can't make a CD entitled "Formula for Success on eBay" that directs newbies here for answers.

I’m sure the infomercial is correct. You can make $15000 per month on internet auctions. Of course it will cost you $25000.

There was a long thread on the Bidville Auction message boards about this type of thing recently. There use to be an infomercial with Tom Bosley of Happy Days fame hawking a drop ship service. Every single poster on the thread told a horror story about paying a large membership fee and then getting stuck with inferior merchandise that everyone else in the universe was also selling.

The ads must find enough newbies to pay for the airtime and make a profit.

HAH!
I remember one hot afternoon, working on a remodel job, part time, no insurance.... and a song came on the radio... It was Bob Seger, singing about how tough it is to be a rock star on the road.... I felt so sorry for him I got up off my aching knees, where I had been groutingtile, and drop kicked that radio through the door....
Well, you know what I mean.

I don't think its impossible, just impossible for one person. Maybe November/December with a big start-up investment. I know of at least one seller who registered in November 2002 and currently has over 2000+ feedback. Last I checked, he ran 750 listings. Negative feedback ratio was higher than I liked, but that is impressive feedback feedback for two months work.

I think I saw the same one! I remember they kept showing some woman cleaning a tea pot. She used to work for the government, but now makes more money on eBay so she can stay home with her kid. (yea more money and no insurance, etc.) The guy pushing this whole thing kept going around about whether or not you need to have a business license and he said you could start selling within one hour of popping in the CD-Rom.

My boyfriend and I couldn't stop laughing so I checked out the site. They sell you some CD-Rom with "Actual screen shots of eBay" ooooo. And they also sign you up with eBay for free. WOW!

Conveniently enough, they also give you free internet dial up (according to the website info, they are located right down the street from the first guy) and then you get a free membership into some wholesale club (I belive also owned by the same people). The stuff didn't look so great.

However, all of the above aside, I thought it was the best 1/2 hour sitcom I'd seen on late night tv in quite a while!

If you think that is bad I once read an ebook (which I think sort of influenced me to start an eBay biz) that claimed that by "Using the magic of dutch auctions" you could earn $100 000 a month!!!

I was like.........WOOOOW!

The thing we can learn from these kind of selling a dream ads is the amazing salesmanship presented by the seller. Also shows there are plenty of suckers that are willing to get screwed! lol

gmx- Well Yeah.

"Dutch Auctions" sounds sooo...European. Truly exotic. Not like normal actions where people bid and stuff.

Actually, I did send for the pamphlet from the Tom Bosley company (Can't remember the name of the group). Thought some of the merchandise on the TV show looked interesting and they caught me at a weak moment.

I don't remember exact numbers, but I think they wanted $350 one-time membership and $30 or so per month fee. The pamphet showed the same kind of knick-knack junk you see at all the cheap flea markets. I quickly filed the pamphlet in my nearest round file.

I think the name of the company that Tom Bosley hawks and everyone is talking about here is called SMC. Speciality Merchandise Corporation, from Woodland Hills, CA.

I agree with the other poster about the "quality" of the merchandise. Like the price.... LOW LOW LOW

If its on late at night and an infomercial, then its very likely aimed at someone unemployed.

I wouldn't buy that junk for 10 cents per item.

5 years ago,you can make 15,000 a month selling collectibles, antiques, electronic goods like pc and camera and scanner.i remember a semi precious stone pendant costing 75 cents got bidded up to 50 dollars,a piece of resin junk bidded up to 700 dollars.
back those days there is less competition and if you are willing to invest in massive uploading programs and list variety of products say 5000 -10,000 items a month, you can pretty much clean up as there is just not that many sellers .
ofc ourse there are less buyers too.
i recall someone selling ruby, saphire and emerald with no photo and ask us to look up the color by referring to simon and schuster gem book page 64.
those were the good old days.
