I've been an ebay member since March 9, 1997 ... ... ... Santa bought me the book, "The Perfect Store" [all about ebay's beginnings and now, written by some guy they let inside for awhile] ... was a VERY interesting read on my way out of town to celebrate more holiday partying with fam ... taught me a lot as far as enlightening me to some inside growing pains I had already heard a bit about, and taught me even more to know that ebay's "bigness" 'just might not' go on "forever" [i.e. monopoly/oppresive-big-business- type attributes] [and this was MY take on this, after reading the book} ..... how long you all been around? ... and where do you think ebay will be 5 or 10 years from now?

I really won't care where Ebay is 5-10+ years by then they will have no need for the little guy like me. I am not a powerseller and I don't advertise items for sale before i have them like some people do- I just hate that- I am just a little fish swimming with some pretty big lately and watching my back as I go.

signed on to eBay in 98 or 99. Used to make a few bucks buying and selling part-time in the winter. In ten or so years eBay will have migrated away from the auction business and into retail and financial services. The auction part of eBay may be sold, eliminated, or scaled down. I see the company advancing into more selling venues such as creating a network something like HSN.

820 unique positives on 2 accounts.
1 neutral
1 negative (from a jerk)

In five years or less, I expect Ebay to split into two sites. One for new and fixed price items and the other for used and yard sale items. It would not surprise me to see them spin off the "used items" site, as it will be a burden to their growth. By that time, I expect to have made a bloody fortune and will be lounging on a white sandy beach on a Carribean island.

The light at the end of the tunnel will turn out to be an oncoming train.

1620 positives. 1315 are from unique users and count toward the final rating.

6 neutrals. 3 were converted from users no longer registered .

1 negatives. 1 are from unique users and count toward the final rating.

In 5 years Ebay may be semi-the same but in 10 years it will be gone or very very changed.

I plan on selling two storage buildings full of records, postcards, 8 tracks, tv guides, etc. in the next two years and retiring so it won't matter much to me!

lindajean it sounds like you will never leave your computer in the next two years so you deserve to retire after that.

March 9, 1997. Amazing, we signed up on the same day. I wonder if there was something special about that day. I remember that ebay got big real fast, so maybe a lot of people signed up around then. I think I will basically be doing the same thing 5 years from now on ebay, for collectibles it is a great market, and has changed the way business is done.

Actually I never even looked at eBay until a year ago - the original member was my husband the buyer (and business traveller) and yes the one negative was his first transaction..went on a biz trip and couldn't figure out the paying part of the transaction..AS a relative newbie I enjoy reading the posts here to get some idea what the eBay experience is all about from more seasoned users..but please dont tell me eBay will be gone! I have 2 kids to put through college!! I have worked my tuckus off selling this past year and I was thrilled to make Powerseller and i rejoiced every time my star changed color...never thought I would really "get into" it like this..(me the person who had a hard time selling Girl Scout Cookies!) Ihope I haven't hitched my wagon to a dead horse!

Libra...

I am selling my records in lots and they may get bigger as I go through. One storage unit is filled with records, 8 tracks and cassettes.

Neglus: the only reason I think it may be gone is because of how much it has changed in the 4 years I have been selling.

I used to enjoy a 95%+ sell through with bids within hours of placing items out for bid. Now, they just sit there for days and some weeks I barely make enough to cover my Ebay fees. Other weeks, It is almost like the good old days so who knows?

I still enjoy it so that is what keeps me going.

ahc3: What a coincidence, signing in membership on the same day! i know pez collecting is what first made me "go there" - spent way too much money - pez prices are more deflated as the years have gone by, because of the fact that ebay exists - it really has leveled prices down [for pez and everything else] - because you can always find things you want being offered by another person that brings it to the 'world's biggest marketplace' ...
now, husband and i sell full time, antiques, on ebay. We have been doing this for about 3 or 4 years, and we make a little bit more money than when we both worked 'other' full time jobs [which is always "almost enough to keep up with the bills"]... mind you we both work more than 40 hours per week at it though. ./.. we really enjoy this and wouldn't want to be punching somebody else's timeclock - i think too that ebay [or some form of it] will be around forever ... in sheer numbers, it's amazing how much it grows and grows ... [even though we have to settle for less and less, as far as what kind of $ items bring in]
