I just received the 3rd non-working Playstation 1 console this week. The auction descriptions all said that they work great. But they all have the same problem: The playstations power up but they get stuck at the on-screen menu that shows "Play CD" or "Memory Card." Selecting either of these will not play the game.
Usually a Playstation will automatically play a game as soon as the power is turned on. I'm guessing that these consoles have been modified (for memory cards/cd-roms/etc.) and I'm wondering if anybody knows how to get them working.

I had the same problem with mine. I fixed it by tossing it in the trash and buying a PS2. It was a great excuse to upgrade.
But, from my understanding, you purchased these for resale and need to recoup your investment. Here is a page that may have some info
http://www.geocities.com/psxrepair/basic.html
They list the following information on your specific problem:
1. Game doesn't load and ends up with the MEMORY CARD screen.
a) Does the CD spin slowly a couple of times then stops? If YES, proceed to LENS REPAIR STAGE 1.
b) Does it spin at a consistent speed while making "tracking" noises, then immediately stops spinning? If YES, proceed to LENS REPAIR STAGE 1, or LENS REPAIR STAGE 2 if the first fails.
c) Does it spin unusually fast then "free-wheels" to a halt? If YES, proceed to LENS REPAIR STAGE 3.
d) Is the CD not spinning at all? If there is any laser activity, proceed to LENS REPAIR STAGE 2 (step 16), or MAIN BOARD if the first fails. If there is no laser activity, then the laser data ribbon might be cut or damaged. Replace if necessary (ribbon only or whole lens assembly).
e) Is your spindle hub missing a ball bearing? Fit with a replacement bearing or a new spindle hub to ensure proper CD traction.
f) Is the problem none of the above? The spindle motor might be the damaged part. If there seems to be friction in the spindle motor when spinning then you need to replace it with a new motor.
