Here is the story: I had some china that belonged to my great grandmother. I had one serving piece, tried to id the mark. Never could and sold it. I was told that my grandmother probably hand painted it herself. Well, guess what? I found some plates at the goodwill yesterday that match the serving bowl! Same Mark and everthing. There are 6 of them. I don't think she did these too!

Now here is the problem: Can't date the mark. I have looked on ebay, google searched it, Looked on Tias and found nada, nothing. Can someone help me date these plates? I sure hope so. I believe it is prior to 1900's. Which would be about right for dear old Great Grandma. Here are the fotos

I'm looking at Kovels "New Dictionary of Marks". The mark is shown in the "Shields" section. the info reads:

CARL SCHUMANN PORCELAIN FACTORY
ARZBERG, BAVARIA, GERMANY (W. GERMANY)
PORCELAIN, GREEN, BLUE UNDERGLAZE
1918+ (1881-PRESENT)

I'm not sure what this dating information means. Hope this info is helpful.

I saw a few schumann marks in my copy of Kovel's but none that matched the one I have. Are you sure you found the exact mark I have in the book? If so, what version of kovels' marks do you have?

I've scanned a pic, you can see it here:
http://users.ranchoweb.com/images/atterol/schumann.jpg

The pic is in black/white....the book is "Kovels New Dictionary of Marks Pottery & Porcelain 1850 to the Present" copyright 1986.

A search on ebay "Carl Schumann" will show some of the marks.

Loretta, You are so kind to do all of this work for me. I have the same book you have and >>>>> I finally found what you found. I wonder what the "Porcelain Green, blue underglaze means. I guess it is describing the mark. Yep, it is blue.

Thanks so so much

I don't know if she really painted to china or not. Seems that it was painted in bavaria
