I was cleaning adhesive off of a gold decorated book with 'undu'. Some of the undu touched the gold decoration and the area where it touched immediately turned black. It must have been some sort of chemical reaction. Is there anything I can do now to turn it back to gold?

it may mean the gold is brass, or what's called german alloy- because Gold doesn't tarnish at all, as far as I know!
Try a little distilled vinager on a qtip, and rub "firmly yet gently" be careful not to rub the leaf right off.
If you do, and it's valuable enough, you can send it to me to be re-leafed....

Dragonmom, thanks for your reply. I tried the vinegar. It didn't remove the tarnish, but didn't remove the gold either, so that's good. I just assume that this is gold. This is one of those special edition books re-printed. It has gilt edges, moire endpages, ribbon bookmark, cover looks like leather. I think I could get maybe $30 - $40 on Ebay, if that. It was in new condition, but now I've messed up about a 2 inch strip of the gold decoration. I've used undu for several years on books and I'm almost positive I've used it before on a book that had gold decoration. Never had this happen before. Can you think of anything else that might remove it? If you want to email me privately my email is [email protected]
Thanks again.
