Hows this. My wife had me clean my office and I found a few of a fairly common Olympic Pin. It is from 1996, but it has the Mascots of 1994 lillehammer olympics. That has been hot lately, so I decided to put one up for $5. Sold tonight at 9pm for $18, did a second chance right away for $17.50, already sold and paypal'ed. Did a third chance for $11, sold. WOO HOO. Going for that forth chance at $10!

I like the idea of the second chance offer because that person who is next wouldn't have bid if they didn't want your item. It gets your merchandise out of your hands into theirs a whole lot faster. I don't have a lot of two of a kind items but this was a great idea that eBay came up with.

Second Chance may be the best idea eBay ever had.
I didn't think so at first. I cynically figured it was just a way for eBay to get their greedy mitts on more fees. But two things changed my mind:
1) You don't pay a listing fee on an SC offer.
2) You are making the offer to a prospect who has not only indicated a definite interest in the item, but has told you how much s/he will pay! In a marketing context, this is precious information.
I study the mail-order catalog industry because I believe there are ideas there we can use. Catalogers spend a lot of time and money trying to identify target groups of people to mail to. (The cost of getting one catalog to one potential customer is more than you might think.)
But with Second Chance, that work has already been done for us. On an item with multiple bids, we have a list of people who are also likely to buy, and how much they will pay.
It's almost like money in the bank.
I am getting lots of duplicate merchandise these days, so I do SC offers daily. I can almost hear the ka-ching when one is accepted.

Really? I get about 66% closure on these.
Could be the difference in our merchandise.

Second Chance has been great for me because I have several of almost everything I sell.
About 90% take me up on the offer.
