We had our ID stolen on Ebay. We had not listed anything for a couple of weeks, and come in one morning and find a Sony Plasma TV on our auctions. We quickly called ebay and they pulled the auction. Our password and everything had been changed.
We had recieved but not filled out one of these emails from "Fraudulent Ebay" asking us to update our password. I believe what happened is they got the password from breaking our hotmail account or AuctionWatch account. We had all of our passwords the same so if they got one they got them all. We had received about 3000 garbled emails the day our ebay account was compromised, I believe that this was an attack to get our password.
We did catch the guy before any damage was done, but it did cost me a lot of time.
Now all of our passwords are unique, and have number and letters like they should. It will be much more difficult for them to break into our system.
Everyone be careful becuase it does happen even when you are careful about doing anything stupid.

Bingo! Never, ever use the same password or user name on every account you have. As you state, they get one they get them all.

wow this is the most informative post i have EVER seen here!!!!!! I didn't know it was possible to crack your passwords through your other accounts!!!!! changing passwords very next thing i do after clicking reply here!

They probably just got one password and then tried it out on the other accounts... many people use the same password for everything and also an easy password...
You should change your passwords every 6 months and do as maggie said mix them up...
for example Married to my greatest love in 1950 could be: MmGl1950
or Weight at birth was 6lbs 4ozs

Should be at leat 8 characters long also
It is too bad so many people do ruin things for others.

Yes change pass words make different, I have a different one for every account including auctionwatch, I took the easy route and used the same one for every account, I still only have 6 letters and numbers, eight probably better give them 2 more to figure out....lol

It happened to me! they also stole my yahoo.com account. I couldn't get in on my auctions, went to seller search and my auctions came up, it had a cell phone listed, I freaked, I got ahold of eBay live and they even called me at my house, she ended the auction and refunded the fees and cancelled the cell phone, I don't even have one myself not to mention selling one. They sent me a new password and I was able to get back in as me. I went to my info and a different person, address and everything else was there, not me. I made the mistake of vertifying my email, id and what eBay never askes for PASSWORD... I had received a spoof letter saying I was to be pre suspended to vertify the ownership of my account. I had the same password for all my accounts so this person tried it on my e-mail used to register with eBay and got that e-mail account as well were all the questions for sellers go as well as paypal, numerous other purposes. So ignore all presuspension letters. I received one in my new e-mail account as well, it was immediately deleted. I tried calling the person who's phone number was in my info, no answer of course. I don't know what eBay did about it, several people I know personally got one, I asked one guy did he vertify and put in his password, he said he did, I told him to go when we got off the phone and to immediately change password. So he did and was not affected by this outrage of theft. Thanks for all the info have enjoyed reading others solutions for problems we share.
