...Bakelite, celluloid and other plastics that you're not sure of? I didn't want to go ahead with dish soap and water until I ran it by people here.
I've got a bunch of old buttons but they really need to be cleaned before I sell them

I've used Simichrome Polish -- a German metal cleaner that has the added advantage of confirming Bakelite authenthicity!
Some Bakelite experts say not to use it, but rather Formula 409 hosehold cleaner, as safer!
I don't know -- never had problems with Simichrome

I think what they say about Simichrome or other cleaners is that it does something to the bakelite. It might take the shine off of it. I use scrubbing bubbles and only a very little in a small area in the back. I think he was asking about just a general cleaning and a mild soap and water will do that. If some of your buttons are metal be sure you dry them thoroughly as they will rust.

i put a little dishsoap in a dish and use my fingers as the cleaning rag on buttons...after washing and rinsing, lay them on a towel and use your blow dryer on a low setting to dry them. works wonders and won't damage the item. use a cotton swab to get in the nooks and crannys.
