I had fun reading about these last weekend. Where I live, there are quite a few garage sales on Friday as well as Saturday (not much on Sunday) - Best purchase so far, some educational materials for $3 that I should be able to sell for $75 to $100. I also got a CD collection at 50 cents each, some are so so but there are some interesting ones in there. Not the greatest day, but a couple of good finds. We'll see what tomorrow turns up.

I just listed a couple of videos from that same sale, figured they were unusual and they were. For a buck each, one is listed for $40 and the other for $15, not bad at all. That was my best stop of the day

I had orthopedic surgery and have been laid up for the last month! I'm going crazy stuck here in the house! especially since the beautiful spring weather has hit here on the east coast...it was a looooooooong snowy winter. I only have 2 more weeks of "recovery" time and I'm chomping at the bit. I don't let myself pick up the local papers, because reading all of those yard sale , rummage sale and FLEA MARKET ads will make me SICK!! Thanks for these threads, they are sweet reminders of the good times to come! This time 2 weeks from now, I'll be sitting at the kitchen table with my streets atlas and post it notes getting ready for action. 2 weeks...2 weeks....2 weeks.... I am counting down!!

We had an estate sale (just one) in our town starting yesterday. I went the first three hours or so and got some good things. Today I went about noon and snapped up some things the ladies were willing to let go for 30% of asking price. I went back three times yesterday and twice today. I think it must really be true that going toward the end of a sale CAN be lucrative--risky but lucrative. The sale finishes tomorrow afternoon, but I'm quite sure I've milked that one dry. Lots and lots of good stuff.

I used to get up to be one of the first into an estate sale. I did that for about 2 years. Pushing and shoving. Getting knocked down, have things pulled out of my hands, well I finally gave that up and now I go about noon on the first day and believe it or not there are a lot of items left that those first ones in have passed over. I only go once unless there is something that I think will be on half price then I go the second day. I guess I am getting old and I hate to fight those early morning battles.

Good for you Roadsmith. It sounds like you live in a beautiful area. Not because of the estate sales but because they way you describe your town with much enthusesium. I hope I spelled that right because I can't find my dictionary. Maybe tomorrow I will.

Libra: We do live in a beautiful place! Our San Jacinto Mountains are 11,000 foot mountains between Palm Springs and the LA Basin. And little known to the outside world. We have pine, spruce, fir, oak, cedar. We have streams and lots of wild animals. We have gorgeous massive rocks on the mountainsides to look out at our windows, we have privacy (no neighbors closer than 2 acres away). And when the moon is full the clear air shows it off. And we have a thriving arts community--one of the 100 best small arts towns in the country. Many artists , art galleries, antiques and collectibles shops. An arts academy by audition only, so we have students from all over the world--many from Japan, in music, theater, dance, visual arts. Our 2200 pop. swells by quite a bit in the summer when tourists and nearby locals come up to escape the heat. It is paradise--at least to us--and we feel lucky to have retired here after coming to these mountains (husband's family) since 1925.

Edited to add: This business of going to sales later in the day is tough! My tug of war constantly is between my acquisitive nature (want to get there first, want to get the Best Stuff!) and my common sense. If I didn't have a roomful of ebay stuff to sell already, the decision would be even harder. But here I sit with all kinds of stuff and there I go, collecting even more. It's like a sickness. I try to tell myself that I have plenty already, but as you know it's so hard to think of missing out on something wonderful. I hope to "grow up" in this regard so I don't have to get up so early in the mornings! Not a morning person--at all.

It rained here and stormed most all day. Kind of a shame because there was
a Beer and Ale Festival scheduled out at Belle Grove. Usually when something
is going on out there you'll find a few really good yard sales coming through town.
I was on call all day but that's usually good because I drive all over the place
when I'm running calls. See lots of sales. Sometimes I even get to stop and look
around.

I think either next week or the weekend after there will be a Antique show up at
the Wayside Inn. Should be some good yard sales then and of course all the
antique dealers will be open. But I'll be in North Carolina at the Monster Truck
Races.

Did have to buy a new headlight for the company truck. Rock hit the left side
headlight and broke it but "new and retail" don't count in this thread does it?
Let's do continue doing these "reports" it's good to hear what everybody picked
up.

I did ok today, better at the flea markets though. Sometimes it works like that. Favorite buy of the weekend was something for me an electric bass guitar (that works!) for $10 - Not sure I need another, but at that price I could not turn it down...

Well, I have good news, and I have bad news. The good news is that I picked up a half dozen very collectible beer steins at a price that is one notch above theft. The bad news is that these steins bring their highest prices in November, and I'm gonna have to sit on them until then.

The light at the end of the tunnel will turn out to be an oncoming train.

Got up. Now thats good for me. Went to a church sale of course got their late but I did get a really nice jewelry find. Sterling Silver pin from Norway. Just gorgeous. Not much else. Then went to some thrift stores looking for that certain buy and hit a few things then to a goodwill but not much there. It finally was an enjoyable day and the weather was actually nice. It was good just to get out....and up...

Libra;

i love the church sales..a couple of years ago i went to one and couldn't get close to the jewelry table for all the dealers picking it over so i looked at everything else first, finding a few great items...by that time the jewelry table had cleared a little bit so i went to look....lo and behold there was a necklace, cut glass beads on a sterling chain with a rhinestone clasp, clearly marked sterling on the back of the clasp and very heavy...$2.00...oh happy day

mine, all mine

My girlfriend came across a Bovano ashtray for $1 (guy told her she could steal it if she wanted, he didn't care. She didn't of course), a set of Otagiri S & P shakers for $.50 and a set of 12 wide mouth quart Ball jars for her candle making for $4. Not a bad morning for her considering how bad it was raining here.

She had never heard of it either. Her Step-mother-to-be collects odd ashtrays and she had planned on getting it for her. But, once we looked it up... LOL

this is another obscure thing to watch for;

hard to find perfumes;

found a gift set of "Princess Elizabeth" perfume at a sale for $3.00...it was in a pretty blue box and brand new so i thought maybe it would bring a few $$. well, it brought $120.00!! come to find out it is very hard to come by...had about 30 emails during the auction just asking for manufacturers address and where i had found it.

go figure

No sales today, it's in the low 50's, raining, and wind gusts to 40mph. Just as well, as it's Mothers day and my wedding anniversary today. Wife might be a little ticked off if I was gone.
Got lucky on friday, however. Picked up a Shawnee Chanticleer with gold and decals, a Vernonware Tweed 2 tier tidbit, Catalina Pottery bowl and a Johroth Studios souvenir vase.

There is a fine line between "hobby" and "mental illness."

I found my buy of this year: an old wooden ironing board at Nana's garage sale - $2

The next day I found a 1940s iron - mint (looked unused, actually) in box - $5.

I'd wanted these 2 for display in my sewing room/study. Made my week!
