From time to time I have someone pay via Paypal and simply ignore my shipping and handling cost clearly stated in the ad and pay less. Shipping cost includes USPS priority. delivery confirmation and gas to PO,packing, etc. I put all my auctions on BIN and live on the East Coast and shipping to points West actually cost twice as much if I lived in the center of USA .. however that to me is irrelavant .. the charges are clearly stated . I always ship anyway but it really rubs my nerves sideways ..Errrrr 95% of the time it ones who sell on Ebay so I assume they know how to READ
Well this is my first post,I have lurcked for sometime, and hae learned a few tidbits

You ship it anyways??? I don't let them get away with it. I simply refund the payment, and type a message to them with the correct amount due. Most of the time, they email me back with, "I must have been confused with a different auction I had purchased." 99.9% of the time they didn't bid on anything else because I occassionally check their items bid for list and see nothing beyond my auction.

If they argue about it, I tell them it is clearly noted in the auction and they shouldn't bid on something that has a shipping cost they don't agree with.

What I hate are the jerks who email me telling me to ship it Media Mail, when it clearly doesn't qualify for Media Mail. Then they cry about how Priority Mail is a huge ripoff, etc.

rustygumbo has it right. Use the refund button and just sent the wrong payment back to them and ask for them to resend the proper amount.
There is a "window" that lets you put a note in it to the buyer so its easy to put in what they owe you.
No way would I ship anything if they do not pay for the shipping. One thing being a nice seller, but that is no reason to be a doormat for anyone.

this usually happens when they use the paypal checkout button, they just give you the auction price.

I don't refund the payment but I tell them they need to go back and pay the shipping...I know, I know,....this costs me another fee but I figure at least I have the purchase price. then I can wait for the shipping.

deur1: I know you said you state your shipping charges in the auction, but do you also put them in the SYI form when you prepare your ads? The part that says "I know my shipping charges..." or whatever? That might cut down on the "mistakes" since the correct shipping amount will be filled in when they hit the PayPal button.

And, I agree with the others: refund them and invoice for the correct amount; or at least hold off on shipping the item until they pay the balance owed.

I hate to say it, but...

If you ship anyway when someone underpays, you have no right to complain. You've just taught your naughty bidder a lesson: s/he can underpay and get away with it.

There's such a thing as being too nice! When buyers get away with such shenanigans, it hurts all of us. They'll keep trying it until they get caught. You, as a seller, are part of an ongoing Buyer Training Program! You need to see that the playing field is level and that everyone abides by the same rules.

Obviously I agree with Roadsmith.

This will probably tick off a few Pollyannish the-sun-will-come-up-tomorrow daisy-sniffers, but not only do opportunistic people exist, I humbly submit that opportunism lives in us all to some extent.

Sometimes we need the firm hand of others to prevent us from indulging in it.
