I am planning on listing this 3 piece dress clip / brooch set and need some serious help from the people in the know here, if you please..

help needed with;
1.how to get my pic to show the sparkle on these stones..even though this needs a serious cleaning

2.is there a formal name for a set like this? the only name i find in the books is clip set

3.any help with a good description would be an extra godsend.

I collect costume jewelry but have never really studied it ... now i have all the books and feel like i am reading Japanese sometimes....I believe these are made with silvered pot metal...the only mark is the patend number

Common white-metal rhinestone convertible dress clip.

Cleaning may not help. The foil backing on the stones (which is what makes them sparkle) discolors over time and exposure to air. The only remedy is to replace the stones...which you are not going to want to do on a piece that isn't precious metal.

Stones with discolored backing are called "dead". A prospective bidder will want to know how many dead stones there are.

Costume jewelry (any kind) sells best when it has a designer or desirable manufacturer name on it.

stopwhining, thank you for your suggestions, they are appreciated.

fluffy, I know designer items sell better, I buy more of those myself. I know you mean well but sometimes in your replys it seems nobody but you owns anything of value....i know what "dead" stones are and while there are 3 dead ones, the rest sparkle very nicely in the correct light, I just can't seem to get a picture of that.

That is called a Coro Duette. If you notice that the two sides can come apart and they becom clips. Don't forget to search the closed items also. Search that name and you will see them. If you look real close at the back you might see coro
written in script. It will be very small and light. The stones in this set can be replaced. One of the ones that is on has stones missing. Age about late 30's.

What a coincidence I was searching this piece of jewelry last night. I have a couple of them. They were very popular and collectible.

Libra, your a doll. I have searched the piece over for the Coro mark and it is not there. I love Coro jewelry and that is why I bought this piece to begin with. Yes, I have taken the pictures outside to no avail I have taken several pictures, front and back, of the pieces apart and together.

another way to try is to go step by step-take it inside with not much light and slowly make it brigher to the point where you can use your photo software to brighten ,sharpen it.

Oh, give it a rest, will ya? You asked for opinions. I gave mine. Don't like it? Put me on "ignore", please.

Libra, Coro was not the only manufacturer to make convertible dress clips and if this piece is not marked Coro, it should not be advertised as such.

From the Official Costume Jewelry book by Harriet Miller:

Duette is Coro's name for a pair of clips that become a pin when placed in a device that has a pin back. Other companies manufactured them under various names, but they are usually known as duettes who ever the manifacture was.

This means that rarriffle has a Coro Duette, even though she can't find a mark as certain this is a pin with a pair of clips.

After reading that I would think that rarriffle has a duette but the manufacturer is unknown since hers is not marked.

Libra: I'm not beating up on you, honest, but you DO know that the "Official" part of that title is simply marketing hype, right?

Just checking. You probably did know that.

That publisher puts out a wide range of "Official" guides but they are not authoritative...just books written by people who want to sell books.

Christie Romero is one of the few jewelry mavens I trust as she actually collects the stuff as well as writing about it.

I have never heard of her until now. So I looked in Warmans Jewelry, One of those official guides. Page #200.

Coro patented the mechanism for the double clip brooch with Coro's tradename duette in 1931, when clips were flat backed and the motifs were geometric, but figural motif duettes, with double pronged hinged clips often called fur clips bearing this same patent number were made in the late 1930's and early 40's.

Patent number is #1798867

Thanks for the info on Romero. In that book I found a bracelet that I have.

There have been several discussions of photographing jewelry on orchidlist ([url=http://www.ganoksin.com/orchid/orchid.htm] ) It isn't easy. Most people seem to believe you need a closed-box setting that's lined so light doesn't bounce all over the place.

My low-tech solution has always been scanning. Instead of putting the hard lid down I lay a soft, solid-colored piece of cloth over the piece or components (I have an old piece of black scrap velvet and a very fine-knit white T-shirt that I use most often.) I have managed to get some decent sparkle on sparkly stuff but you don't have the reflections bouncing all over.
