I bought some glass items yesterday, and need help in identifying them. The first is a red vase, with yellow tips to the points. It's almost 12" tall.

The second is a set of blue frosted glass, consisting of a tray, perfume atomizer, a pot with butterfly topped lid, and a container with a fitted stopper. What would you call this set? A dressing table set?

Any help would be greatly appreciated. I don't even know where to start looking.

I think your first picture is Viking Glass from the 60's.

Your second one is an Irice (maker) dresser set, I think from Japan or Tiwain. Nice collectible for perfume collectors.

the vase at the top favors some made by Fenton but it does not look Fenton quality, does it have a pontil (grounded section) in the middle of the bottom? If so then it is blown glass. Fenton would blow the vase in the mold and then swing the piece to get the edge to shape in this fashion....really amazing to watch.

the second pic is definitely a dresser set, cream and perfume bottles.

are there any marks on either piece?

There is no pontil mark on the bottom of the red vase, and no marks at all on any of the items. The elderly lady I purchased them from said that the dresser set had belonged to her mother, and she thought it was depression glass. The colors look varied on the picture, but they are all the same, pale blue frosted glass.

I agree with Libra about the vase. It looks like Viking amberina. But I don't recall Fenton or Viking doing the diamond pattern around the base. Plus it looks too stretched for Fenton.

The dresser set looks too new for depression. The color is off and the brass is really shiny. Take a good look at the bottom. There should be wear. Very pretty though.

Thanks jensmome, I looked through every auction for viking glass on eBay, and the only one that looked a little bit similar was 2639429158, but like you say, it does not have the diamond pattern. What is "swung" vase?? Could I list it under Viking glass do you think?
What would you list the blue dresser set under, and anyone have any idea of approx value? There is slight wear on the bottom. The seller said it had been wrapped and stored for many years, which could explain it's new appearance. I need to take some better pictures before I list, color is not good on my present pictures.

The blue in the perfume set looks too bright for depression glass but it may be off in the pic. If you do a search for "perfume butterfly" on ebay you will see quite a few sets in pink. One is described as depression but most look newer to me.

You can't really go by the statement that it belonged to my mother or grandmother as many were purchasing items or receiving items as gifts right up until their deaths which may have been quite recent.

It is a pretty set whether it's newer or older.

"Swung" is when the glass is literally pulled or swung while still almost molten. It stretches the shape.

You need to see if there are mold marks. The only glass maker I know that is heavily into diamond point is Indiana but the diamonds look too fine and I have never seen an Indiana swung vase.

It's very pretty and I'd list it using words like amberina, swung, diamond, art glass. You should also list the number of points at the mouth. Some makers had a distinctive number that they always used. In old vases that's one way to distinguish Northwood vs. Fenton. It could also be a very old "whimsey"; that is, pressed piece that was modified in manufacturing by altering the shape while the glass was still hot.

on the dresser set, are the butterflies glass or plastic? there are some new sets made but the top finial or handle is plastic.

rarriffle they are all glass. I found the following closed auction, and they do look very similar to mine, what do you think?
2636873160 They are listed under depression glass, so maybe the seller was correct.

Looks too new to me also to be depression. Brass is very shiny and new looking. There should be some patina on the brass if it's that old, I should think. I love it though. It would look great in my bedroom. Now, if I could get my boyfriend to buy me the 1930's dressing table I've been eyeing. . .

Amber,
Keep in mind that "depression" does not necessarily lend value to glass. It all depends on scarcity and appearance. Plus, a lot of depression glass is being reproduced. Unless you are knowledgable, you should take the label depression with a grain of salt.

Good pictures and a great description with key words will sell an item. You have both.

Depression satin glass?

Extremely unlikely.

That dresser set is of recent manufacture. The glass is wrong to be old, the brass (as someone mentioned) would not be bright, and the atomizer bulb would not look brand-new.

Actually, Fluffy, there's a fair amount of satin depression glass. Mostly in pink but also found in yellow and crystal. And it was especially common in "accessory" items such as vanity pieces. A lot of it was also painted or enamelled with flowers etc..

This set, however, is not depression.

The red vase, looks just like the one I had at one time. I purchased it at Woolworth's dept. store back in the 60's. Mine was about 2.5 feet tall and cost around $6.00 at that time. Hope this helps ya!

I really appreciate all the help, you guys are great. I have a bit better picture of the dresser set.

What category should I list it under. Also, do I list it as a 4 piece set, or count the removeable tops, and call it a 6 piece set?

According to ebay's hot list this is a good area right now for your pieces

http://forums.ebay.com/db2/forum.jsp?forum=29

collectables -
Vanity, Perfume & Shaving
Perfumes
Compacts
Powder Jars

I would put 4pcs in title and note lids in body of ad
