Havilland Limoges blank. Looks like the painting was done by a hobbyist, not a professional.
Here is an example of a finely painted piece:

Hope this helps!

rarriffle, be sure to double list the pretty plate to the Haviland AND Limoges categories. The Haviland collectors detest pieces that are handpainted outside the factory, whereas the Limoges buyers love the handpainted pieces. There are some Limoges buyers who buy only 19th century Limoges dishes with handpainted butterflies, so make sure you write "butterfly" and "butterflies" in your text.

The age of the plate is 1876 to 1889.

In the future, here is a simple trick for marks. Oh, more than 90% of the time, if the mark has a capital L in it, that L stands for Limoges. For example, H&Co underscored by L, or L.R. underscored by L, or J.P. underscored by L.

And another thing, I disagree with inot in that the piece may have been painted by an amatuer. My guess is the piece is studio painted, based on the lack of a signature and that the French studios were fond of using the circular technique of a painting on a painting, for a different dimensional effect.

At the minimum, mention in the auction that the piece may be Limoges studio decorated, though lacking a decorating mark.

Great advice everyone. I asked about a small pitcher a few weeks ago and got some great advice. I was told to put gold gild and pink roses in the title. I started the bidding at $14.99 and it ended at $52.50...much more than I expected. I don't know that I would have gotten that much without the advice I was given on this board.

I agree be sure to put the gold gild and butterflies in the title. It is very pretty and should do well.

Do a search on google for "porcelain marks". I found a great site but can't find the bookmark at the moment.

Are you joking about the age of the plate? It is in such perfect condition that i assumed it was contemporary.

I paid a whole 50 cents for it just because of the butterflies.

thank you so much for all the great advice.

also, looking closely at the back of the plate, there are the initials y w under the glaze..any ideas on that?

rarriffle, the age I told you is correct, 1876 to 1889. That is why French Limoges porcelain is so wonderful. The glaze rarely crazes. A piece from the last half of the 1800s, if treated with respect, wlll appear as if it was made today.

Cupotea,l You are so right about Limpges china/ Especially from the more notable makers. I have a haviland cake on right now that is from the late 1800's & is absolutely gorgeous.
