I'm going to go to ebay live - we leave next Wednesday. How do you word vacations in your auction? I know there's the threat that someone could break into your house while you're gone so don't mention it anywhere, but I have family and neighbors that will watch the house, take the mail in, etc. I want buyers to know that I will ship for the last time early Wednesday morning and then not again until Monday. Anyone know how to word that professionally? My mother suggested saying "we will be out of the office", but I don't want people to think we are impersonal and have offices and run this like a business. I know that sounds strange, but it goes along with the "if you're a powerseller you don't give good service" mentality.

PS - the spellcheck didn't like the word ebay - that's pretty funny

I'm kind of curious as to why you fell that you don't want people to think you run your business like a business?

If you are only going to be gone for a couple days say you are upgrading you computer and will be offline until Monday.

I think I don't want people to know I run my business like a business is because of all the bad publicity the "big businesses" on ebay get. Not that I'm big, but it goes along the same line as "if you're a powerseller don't display the logo because people don't want to deal with businesses on ebay" - they want to deal with the mom and pop families that don't care what they make and give you great customer service. That's the impression I get from my buyers anyway. More than once a week someone will email me and say "I was surprised you emailed me personally with a total - I figured with all your feedback everything would be impersonal". I don't want to give the Impersonal feeling.

It's a good thing you didn't say only your 18 year old daughter would be home.

You would have returned to find your grass gone from everyone beating a path to your door!

I would either leave it with either computer upgrades or that you are switching providers from cable to DSL and you will be without service until whatever your date of return is. That way you are still home and such, it's just that you cannot get online.

I close for a week to "count the inventory". Put in all my auctions that we will not ship that week, close the online store and forward my emails to a hotmail account that I check once a day just to put out fires. Has worked well the past four years.

For the short amount of time you are talking about... I wouldn't say anything. It is less than a week.

Please Note I will be out of town on vacation from June 7th through June 15th ...Sorry but No one but my fourteen year old nymphomaniac daughter will be home and she wouldn't be able to answer any questions but the door is always open hope this doesn't causes any problems

Seriously, this is such a brief time I am surprised you are concerned. I mail only twice a week.

Most hotels have high speed internet and some even have wireless in all the rooms.
Of course if you are staying at the Sleepy Hollow that's different.
I have run my Ebay business from all over North America,Chile,Australia,New Zealand,Colombia,Hawaii,San Salvador,Honduras and quite a few other places.
It's not like you are going to Mars for the month.

I wonder how Meg is going to contact the folks at the office.

We or I (whichever is applicable) will not be shipping from STARTDATE to RETURNDATE. We or I will resume shipping on RETURNDATE. Also leave an applicable message on your auto responder and any emails which are sent automatically in your absence.

I generally mention the last day I will be shipping and occasionally where I am off to if it is business related. AS I don't use my home address for business nor publicize it I don't concern myself with security issues.

How about not running any more auctions until you are back. When I take a vacation, I stop listing 10 days before hand. That way I don't have to worry about the typical powerseller type of negative feedback, non-responsive seller won't answer e-mails complaint. As a seller, your reputation is critical. Enough negs and most people will think twice about bidding. And stopping 10 days ahead of time, you will have most of your payments in and product out. Also when you come back, you won't have a huge back log to try and sort out.

FGS Either don't have auctions during the time you are gone or use a laptop to keep track of your auctions. Thar is what I did at Xmas last year.

Thanks for all the advise. I ship everyday, and state that in my TOS - that's why I was concerned. I do plan to check my email and auctions everyday from there anywhere, so I guess I won't worry about it. I think I'll just put a line in my WBN saying that I will be gone and if you need it shipped fast to please use paypal (or something like that). I hate to not list for 10 days before hand just to take a few days off - would lose too much money. I would do that if I was gone for a couple weeks, though. I probably won't have any regular auctions ending during those couple of days, but plan to have a lot of BIN & FP auctions running around that time.

Last time I was gone and unable to ship i posted something like this in RED in my auctions and also included in my WBN - (from the sounds of it you won't be gone long enough to alarm anyone): "I will be unable to ship post cards from x date to x date. If you will need your widget prior to that time, please do not bid in my auction. If you are paying by PayPal and would feel more comfortable, please wait to pay me until X date."

I am in Oregon now helping my mother post-op and have left shipping to my 19 yo daughter...prayers on both the mom and shipping appreciated.

neglus gave me an idea.

If you really want to sound personal, yet be truthful, yet not indiciate that you'll be absent from your home, cite the good old favorite "family obligations." That could be a wedding, a Bar Mitzvah, a gathering at your house or any other big family celebration.

A vacation is a family obligation, right? As in "your family would kill you if you tried to back out now?"
