Are these STONEWARE or EARTHENWARE -- how do you tell the diff?

WHAT are these beauties called?? Jugs?? Buckets??

The brown one is: 7" HIGH X 4.25" TOP DIAMETER & is UNMARKED

The WHITE (gray?) one is: 8" HIGH X 6" TOP DIAMETER & is marked "PAT FEB 11 1896"

WHAT CATEGORY do these belong in?

THANKS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Big Jugs caught my attention!
They are stoneware, both originally had lids. They were storage jars. Much like we use tupperware today. Not much value. Check out stoneware jars.

My compliment on the headline as well....

They might also be known as "Crocks" -- use that in your research as well.

I say Stoneware - it's much heavier and less fragile than earthenware. I think it has more sand too.
The top one looks like a crock and the bottom is more a jar but you could call either a crock, jug or jar.
Nice pieces.

Well, I don't know if they have little value or not. They are great! I love them! They remind me of what my great aunt and uncle had on the farm. The second one reminds me of what she used after milking the cow. She used it in the kitchen. The first one maybe stored something dry like grain? beans? or maybe lard? The black inside the top jar reminds me of those things. I am no pro at id'ing antiques. Maybe someone else can shed some light on them.

Tomwill: Stoneware & crockery are the same. Years ago it was crockery, now its stoneware. I remember as a kid that my mother made pickles in a 20 gallon crock vat. That was in the 30's.

the bottom looks like there is a mark near the bottom?

some of these can sell very well, it depends on the maker, if it can be identified.

i was at a farm auction a while back and they had a bunch of crocks.

when the 3rd one came up for bid there were several hands in the air, all of them dropped after $20.00, except for 2. they kept going until that crock sold for well over $400.00. the rest of us were amazed, but it had to do with the maker.

Wish it were a maker's sign -- it's the patent:
"PAT FEB.11,1896"

The top one is salt glazed. That is what gives it the brownish color and the rough texture. Salt glazed stoneware (or crocks) usually bring more than smooth ones. They actually put salt in the kiln so that it vaporized when it was hot and changed the texture. The bottom one reminds me of the shape of Red Wing Stoneware pickle jars but it needs the trade mark to make it the most valuable.
