I appreciate the help you have given me here. I don't usually deal with glass, my main area is toys. Can anyone tell me who made this butter dish, or maybe if it is old or new?

It's not glass.

Is there a page somewhere that explains the different "breakable" materials used to make stuff like this? I can't seem to find one. I would like to know how to easily tell glass from porcelain from china and whatever else is similar.

The manufacturer is "Takito" / Japan / Porcelain
(1880-ca. 1948)
The mark is located in Kovel's New Dictionary of Marks - page 54-F
Hope this helps....

Thanks... I guess I will have to invest in one of those books, they seem useful.

Order from Amazon - don't go directly to Kovel's site -- they take FOREVER! Bought one from Kovel's -- took 2 weeks -- one from Amazon came in 3 days.

I just went to Amazon to look at them... should I get the Kovels Dictionary or the New Kovels Dictionary or both?

I just have the "New" Dictionary book. I'd have to defer to others who have used the older version for their opinions.
They mention that the new book doesn't include "some" of the marks in the older book.
If I were you - and I was in your position just a few weeks ago - I got the new book and if I find I can't locate some items, I'll eventually get the earlier book, too.

It doesn't appear to be a butter dish. Depends on the length, however, it could be a celery dish.

It's really charming! And, yes, we need to know length. It appears to be lusterware, but hard to tell.

It is 8" long and 4" wide, it is about 1" tall.

I think this would be classified as a celery dish. It is not real old as it is marked Japan. Made after 1921. Would not be of hreat value.
