I've seen several sellers include a tape measure or ruler in their listing photos.
What do you think?
I can understand showing them when you're doing small items - say under 2-3 inches - but not for larger items.
Do they add to the description or detract from nice photos?

In my 6 yrs of selling on ebay I have rarely used them, but I do like the looks of them. I have started using a tape measure in some of my pictures, I can never seem to see the numbers on a ruler in the photo.
I think they work well for glass or paper items where the size is important. Things that you do not know the size of the item unless the seller states it. It's nice to be able to quickly see that an item is 12" long when from the photo it looked like it may only be 3-4" long.
What I have used in the past is other items as size references. When I take pictures of large plush I use beanies, since most people know the size of a beanie. I also frequently use a Hot Wheel car to give a reference to the size of the item. I have seen other people use coins for size reference on small items.
I don't think the rulers detract from an image, but I also think you only need it in 1 image per listing. If you take close-ups and back or side views as well, leave the ruler out of those.

If the size of an item is of any importance I put in a ruler for the photo. And according to my wife in most cases "Size does matter".

I always measure auction goods and include those measurements in the auction description. What is truly amazing is the sellers that never mention the dimensions of their item at all. To me that is one of the cardinal sins of selling.

Personally I don't care for the look of the ruler (or soup cans, Chapstick, or other strange things people put in there). I'd prefer to see the item with just a good description of the size. I do like the looks of little backdrops like a nice floral arrangement or attractive fabric or something like that. I can't believe some of the listings I've seen with food wrappers, dirty blankets, a shirt as a background, or whatever they can dig up. And to see a cat on a quilt or something I'm interested in...I'm allergic to cats and that's the last thing I want to see on something I want to cozy up to - even though I'd wash anything like that. It's all merchandising and to see a sloppy listing or things that are filthy, just turns me off. Just my opinion.
Have fun listing!

I think it is fine as a visual clue, but not a substitute for actual measurements in descriptions. I keep a ruler on my desk just for helping to visualize eBay items I am interested in.

I like the ruler, but you should also measure items yourself. I also sometimes use a caliper to measure small, very oddly shaped items. (Is it "calipers" or "a caliper"? I can never figure that one out.)

When I sell my jewelry I try and include in the last image the backs of the jewelry with a coin then they can get some idea of the size. I don't use any measurement devices in my first picture because I don't like the looks. In my description I list all the particulars that need to be addressed.

Hi everybody,
I don't use rulers very much but right now I have some gold herringbone jewelry listed. I used a ruler in the pics so people could see the width better. Also used it in a shot of a tiny little Japan stein.
Another time I used a ruler was when I was selling several lots of quilting fabric. Figured it would be easier for the bidder to judge the size of the pattern because the close-up shot made it larger than life.
I think it just depends on the item. When I'm buying, I like to know the size without guess-timating.

I don't like rulers in the pictures unless it's "guy stuff".
And I don't like hands showing jewelry and other dainty items. A ring on a model's hand is one thing but I have seen pics of rings stuck partway down pudgy or hairy fingers and it looks gross. And it looks even worse if the nails are dirty or broken.

I occatinally use a ruler. Buy a pretty one like light red which scans well. Is only about $1.00. It helps
