I finally found some simichrome... this stuff is great! My and my 8yo daughter just polished up one of her baby doll spoons and it worked like a charm (it was an older wm rogers spoon). So next I tried a chamberstick that I thought was pewter, and it sparkles nice and shiny like the silver. This stuff is so much fun!

My question is... when you test for bakelite, do you use a washrag or a paper towel? I tried testing a few things that I thought were bakelite with a washrag, but I only see dirt on the washrag, so they must not be bakelite. It is suppose to be yellow, right? How noticeable is the yellow? I might have to go buy something just so I can see what it is supposed to look like.

One other question... my washrag is now black, does this wash out or should I just throw it in the rag box now? I would hate to throw it in the washer and have my other stuff get all black too.

I usually use an old tee shirt, and toss it when I've used it up. I doubt that it will wash clean, as the times I've tried, there has always been black marks left in the material.

It's also great for getting utinsel marks out of old mixing bowls. It takes lots of "elbow grease", but it makes them look like they are unused.
As far as testing bakelite, I've always just rubbed it with my finger till it gets warm and smelled it. Bakelite gives off a chemical odor when rubbed or run under hot water.

There is a fine line between "hobby" and "mental illness."

As far as testing on bakelite, it should turn a dark orangish yellow, with Simichrome. I use an old soft cloth. That is the only bakelite test I have ever felt comfortable with. Believe me, I have been diasppointed more than once, when nothing happened!!
